Designed specifically with today’s DSLR users in mind, the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G lens from Nikon is ideal for photographers of all levels looking to get creative. Known for its reliability, clarity and devotion to the needs of passionate photographers, NIKKOR, the exclusive lens brand from Nikon, is on a quest to create the finest optics in the world. And with this ultra-fast supreme lens you can expect just that, delivering outstanding image quality with edge-to-edge sharpness and high contrast at any aperture or focus distance.
Perfect for portraits, landscapes, low-light scenes and more, the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G lens offers passionate photographers an easy and affordable way to discover the difference wide aperture can make.
Life Through a Lens
Nikon recognises that every photographer is unique, seeing the world in very different ways. So whatever your ideas, experience or creative vision, NIKKOR offers an array of lenses to draw out your potential. This fast, well-balanced 50mm wide-aperture standard lens with a maximum aperture of f/1.4 captures images with exquisite sharpness even in low light situations. Realising a high Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) this fixed-focal length lens provides photographers with an effortless way to shoot natural-looking picture blur with a shallow depth of field. And with these conditions a bright viewfinder image is created making it easier to achieve the very best composition.
Providing outstanding optical performance the lens comprises an 8 element, 7 group configuration and a nine rounded-blade iris diaphragm which renders images with a more natural appearance in out-of-focus areas. Efficiently correcting sagittal coma flare and other types of lens aberrations, the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G offers great precision towards the edges of the frame particularly when using large apertures.
Nikon's AF-S technology is yet another reason why professional photographers like NIKKOR lenses. Nikon’s exclusive Silent Wave Motor (SWM) converts travelling waves into rotational energy to focus the optics. This enables high-speed autofocusing that’s extremely accurate and super quiet. So for discrete shooting you can set up the shot in an instant and camera focusing won’t disturb sensitive subjects like wildlife.
Combining ease-of-use and maximum precision the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G Lens has two focus modes. In addition to Manual focus, Manual-priority autofocus (M/A) allows you to switch from autofocus to manual operation with virtually no time lag, even during AF servo operation and regardless of the AF mode in use. This gives all the benefits of fast, automatic focusing while still retaining the ability to make fine focus adjustments before taking the shot.
Nikon's Internal focus (IF) technology limits all the optical movement to the interior of the non-extending lens barrel. This intelligent system allows for a more compact and lightweight design as well as a closer focusing distance to approximately 45cm (1.5ft). With the non-rotating front element the use of circular polarizing filters and lens-mounted flash accessories is possible making this lens a versatile option.
Cleverly crafted in a way that only an optical manufacturer can understand, Nikon creates technologies that make NIKKOR lenses the best choice for any type of still or moving imagery. Omitting the need for an aperture ring, G-type lens aperture is controlled electronically through the camera. Electronic adjustment is not only very efficient but also allows Nikon to place a weather sealing on the lens mount, so you can shoot with complete confidence.
The AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G lens from Nikon is ready to capture creative photography in the widest variety of conditions.
Focal length of 50mm when used on a camera with an FX sensor. When fitted to a DX-format DSLR this lens has an angle of view equivalent to that of a 75mm lens in 35mm format.

Where this lens shines is in lower light situations. This lens will normally come out of my bag during evening sessions when my F2,8 7-200mm isnt pulling in quite enough light and I still need a decently fast shutter speed.
Autofocus is solid even at F1.4, but not silent, and build quality is reassuringly solid, despite being mostly plastic.
Overall, this is a solid lens for the price, but you need to really consider if the extra stop of light is worth the additional £200 for you.
The lens is excellent in every way. It's not a light lens but that is what a lens like this should feel like. The overall construction is really good quality with both metal and plastic. It is weather sealed so can be used in light rain.
It comes with a lens hood and bag to store when not in use.
The quality of the pictures when used with a D800 has been unbelievable. I am an old school photographer and still have my FM2 and the original Nikkors made of steel and proper glass. Though not comparable to these, this lens is worth every penny and it does cost a lot of pennies!
The colours and contrast are spot on and any minor aberrations can be corrected quite easily in Lightroom.
I use this all the time and it focuses quickly and quietly without any problems. Really tough construction and has taken a few knocks but still looks new. Use a good quality 77mm UV filter though to protect from dust and scrapes.
Pictures viewed on a large 40" HDTV are flawless. You cannot appreciate the quality and depth until you see pictures at this size. The combination is the lens and the D800 is fantastic.
Really pleased after a year and a half of use.
F1.4 does give you a few more create options that zooms don't give you. But to me its a training add. It helps me break some bad habits. It helps prevent me getting into a rut, and forces me to look at my surroundings in a different way and take more creative shots.
Having thought about this purchase for weeks before finally ordering. I am so glad that I did this lens is everything that all the reviewers say it is, and for being able to use it in low light situations it,s fantastic.
Really chuffed with this.
Bought this on moving up to a full frame DSLR and it is the smallest, lightest and fastest lens I own. I wanted to use my camera more and previously carrying a DSLR body with a 24-70 or 70-200mm lens just on the off chance of taking a photography just did not work. Now I happily carry camera and this lens without a problem.
Additionally, as it is not a zoom, it makes me think about composition and move my feet. And its not just back and forth but trying a lower or higher angle and moving around the subject. This lens is in effect teaching me to see and consider the shot.
I like its size, weight, build, lowlight capability and depth of field that it allows and also it is discreet and does not send people running for cover as the lenses I mentioned earlier can do.
I have found close focus distance is not as good as I would like but if I didn't have the lens I would not have had the camera with me and even been able to take the picture.
I would recommend a 50mm lens to everyone with a full frame DSLR and either the 50mm or 35mm to everyone with a crop sensor camera. They do make you consider the shot and move to view more than one angle rather than simply zooming in and out.
Buying this from Amazon was a dream with a good price and delivery very swift.
So was it worth the money I had to pay to exchange it? Probably not but it makes me feel more professional!
Seriously though, the ability to shoot in very low light, get super-fuzzy backgrounds and amazingly sharp pictures gives me a lot of pleasure.
