Dithered over another D3100, D5100 and D7100 bodies.
I felt I had mastered my D3100 - gradually weaning myself off the pre set menus and was looking to upgrade but review of the D7100 put me off as it sounded a bit too advanced for me.
This feels heavier but strangely smaller than my D3100.
Bought the body as I had a kit and two other lenses.
Love the flip out tilt LCD screen - great for tripod use especially.
Effects option gives you a few extra toys to play with though I am not really sure when I would use them.
Shutter release and responsiveness feels so much better than the D3100. Everything just feels faster.
The camera doesn't struggle with auto focus on my 55 -200 lens like the D3100 did. It is quick.
Picture quality is very good.
Video looks good but not sure how much I will use it.
Layout ergonomically feels more logical and it makes the camera easier to use.
If I was a more confident photographer I might have bypassed this for the D7100 but I was tiring of my D3100 so this will do me until I get awesome :-)
Glad I bought it
This year I obtained a D5100 body only at a good price with the additional features of flexible / protected LCD screen ,the true HD video the capability of taking an addtional microphone for the video ( see my Rode stereo video mike review) somea addiitonal special features and a simple HDR function( blending multipictures from extreme dynamic range pictuires like a coloured glass windo in a dark church)
Why not get a more recent model ? It was not just price - I do not need more than 16 Megapixels , nor Wi-Fi , nor GPS.
As an interested amateur ( rather than a professional) this camera ( together with te D3100 as an excellent second camera) meets my needs - see the comments of other reviewers who got it from new.
If you can get it at a good price and already have nikon lenses ( I have just added a 35mm AF-S DX prime lens) Go for it
I decided I would buy the new D5200 but had to send it back the quality w as not there and the dials where slightly smaller did not suit me plus I had focusing problems .It was no good I went back to my favourite D5100 as it has been tried and tested for great reliability and good quality shots.
I don't know why but the D5200 was just not right it stayed on twice and i had to take the battery out to switch it off , perhaps I just had a bad factory one ,
still my new
D5100 has arrived and immediatly the shutter is much smoother and I am back to great quality shots again .
Its just a great camera
Also the Service by Amazon delivered here in France in Four days was Brilliant.
The combination of these two produces excellent results, if you shoot RAW.
RAW vs JPEG is like BluRay vs DVD - a considerable difference in image quality.
Don't be fooled into thinking you need a higher megapixel count - you don't, 16MP is all [almost anybody] will ever need; the rest is just upgrade anxiety. The Sony sensor inside this camera delivers insane levels of detail - as though you're looking at a visual effect [ which you are, in effect.]
V light in the hand, and not too bulky, I waited 18 months for the price to drop, so got a real bargain.
Excellent camera for the amateur photographer.
Long story short, if you already have Nikon lenses, then get this if you want to shoot video. You cant control the shutter speed of the video footage, which kind of sucks, and you have to use AE-L exposure lock to get manual exposure, but the footage it records looks miles better than my old standard def camcorder and I can use all my nikon lenses to boot. It also doubles as a camera so I can leave my heavier D700 at home if I'd rather just take this with me on a trip.
When using the video function, I half press the shutter to get my initial auto focus, and the manually focus once I've started recording.
If I was going to get a dslr for video for not a lot of money I probably would have got the canon 60D just because you have more control over your video, but for someone who already owns nikon lenses, you cant go wrong with this DSLR, and the footage looks great.
