You get uncompromised image performance whether you shoot RAW size Large, Medium, or Small. And both the camera and the optional MB-D18 Multi-Power Battery Pack boast extensive weather sealing: you have the freedom to shoot for longer periods, anywhere. Combination of speed, detail & precision
Land the award-winning moment with the ultimate combination of speed, detail, and precision. Up to 9 fps burst rates at full resolution. Phenomenal autofocus.
Reveal those all-important seconds with the ultimate combination of power and endurance. The D850 shoots at 7 fps. Or you can shoot at 9 fps when using the optional MB-D18 Multi-Power Battery Pack with the EN-EL18B battery (used in the D5) inserted. You get full resolution images, even when shooting in RAW, and the D5 battery allows up to 1840 shots on one charge (in single-frame release mode, based on CIPA standards). A dedicated AF processor ensures blazing subject recognition when you shoot a high number of frames per second: even small subjects moving at high speed in low light can be tracked with remarkable precision. And the camera’s dual card slot unit lets you use a UHS-II SD card and an XQD card—the fastest combination possible.
Class leading ISO range
Reveal the details hidden in the darkest scenes and the deepest shadows. With a class-leading ISO range of 64–25600, extendable from 32 to 102400
Experience practically noise-free performance at high ISOs and incredible precision even when you shoot in near darkness. The fast EXPEED 5 processing engine inherited from the D5 ensures masterful image quality across the phenomenally wide ISO range. The sensitive autofocus system performs with incredible precision down to -3 EV across all focus points, and the central point performs at -4 EV (ISO 100, 20 °C/68 °F) . The 180K-pixel RGB sensor and Advanced Scene Recognition system deliver spectacular results down to -3 EV.

The fast EXPEED 5 processor ensures beautifully clean files, remarkably free of noise, moiré, and false colour. You can film 4K timelapse movies in camera. And the sensor’s 45.7 effective megapixels let you create spectacular 8K timelapse movies in post, after an in-camera interval timer shooting session.

I'm gonna keep this brief...If you like the D810, you will like this. Just more refinements, bit more detail, better high ISO. The JPG SOOC recipe is better than the D810 so I have to tweak less in post to keep colours where I like them.
The auto focus in this camera is a step up with regards to tracking etc. The finder is stunning, the ergonomics unmatched and all round a very well built body with no recalls that has a massive lens catalogue and lighting options to back it all up.
Now the reason for no 5th Star.
First reason:Me as a photographer. This camera will show your weakness in your shooting technique. Its 49mpx will some times when pixel peeping blurry, until you improve your hand held technique, correct SS etc, on a 36mpx D800 or 24mpx D500 you can get away with it, on 49mpx NO. I have def 100% improved my technique since getting this camera.Took me about 2 weeks to see why it was slightly blurred pixel peeping images. Now i dont worry so much as i know the SS i need and make sure i am not rushing the picture taking process.
LV is tbh extremely good, press OK button and you can see the scene on a great LCD screen(adjustable) and adjust Ambient light to how you want the picture to look, so many other great things on it including focus peaking, silenent shooting, its just great, so why the negative on LV. Its Banding. All Electronic VF will suffer banding under specific Lighting(Strip lights, Old Tube lights, some LED). So if i shoot at 1/1000 and have that light source, the picture looks to flicker in the LCD, take it down to 1/100, no flicker, except i need 1/1000 minimum, thus it cant be used. Out of 5 events i have done, only 2 allowed me to use it, rest were Banded. I do love the VF function, it allows you to get some really original positions/angles but only lighting dependant. P.S LV can be used in conjunction with Flash, but not in Silent mode,
Fine Tuning Lens to Body. This is a must. Some people will say its not needed, but after testing many Non Nikon lenses and Nikon Lenses, it must be done as each lens is different, in Low Mpx bodies its not an issue, they just don't show it up(a bit like the technique issue). So when you get this, calibrate the lens to the body( Either AFT in the body, its stored in the body each lens value, or get it calibrated). Once you do this images are just so sharp every time.
Autofocus. AF i hear you say, Its very very very good compared to other models i used. In wedding situation its great, no complaints at all. In sports, now that a little harder to judge. I was shooting at 6400 at 1/1250 SS, f/2.8 last night, Tumbling training session, i noticed in AFC-S that it wasn't refocusing as fast as i expected, Tumbler coming towards me, i would have 3 pics out of focus then you see its then locked on and sharp. In full light its spot on almost every time but my work is low light sports, stadiums/arenas. Switching to Group was better but this means i have less control on my subject. Difference at F2 or F2.8/3.2 between a face or a hand near the face is difference between lost shot and a money shot. I tried 3D - keeps jumping of target so not used now, D9 worked well, so i ended up having Spot on default and backbutton stick D9.
Do i regret getting it, No Way, its best thing i ever got to enhance both me as a photographer and my work. It allows me to be more creative with lighting, seeing the result before i shoot it, and also the ability to change a composition without losing the quality in the picture. Would i love the D5? Yes i think i would but without the battery grip i get 7fps which is enough for me, its smaller than the D5, feels solid and has adjustable screen, allowing you to shoot low or high easily on the fly.
At first, it is easy to underestimate the sheer power of this camera.
Personally, it is only after I had downloaded the photos in Lightroom and started to play with the RAW that I was able to fully appreciate its capabilities. Thanks to its tonal response, dynamic range and the quantity of information stored in the RAWs, it is a camera that lets you do about anything you want.
White balance, focusing, metering are also impressive.
A conviction 5-star and worth every penny.
