From the manufacturer
SnapBridge maintains a constant, low-power connection between your camera and your smartphone or tablet to give you easy control over your photographic life. You can sync shots to your smart device while you shoot and share Nikon-quality images in an instant. You can also control key camera functions via your phone, keep your camera on time and up-to-date and more.
BLOW YOUR FRIENDS AWAY: DSLR IMAGE QUALITY
With the D3400 in your hands, it’s easy to create high-quality images that never fail to impress. Move beyond snapshots and revel in the freedom to achieve dazzling images in low light or to create portraits with smooth background blur. Whether you shoot photos or movies, the large 24.2 megapixel DX-format sensor works with Nikon’s powerful EXPEED 4 image processor and your NIKKOR lens to ensure richly detailed results. The wide ISO light-sensitivity range of 100 to 25600 means you can capture clear results, even in the near-dark of a gig, or when out on a romantic evening walk. Combine all this with the camera’s always-on connectivity, and you’re free to shoot images you’ll be proud to share. Instantly.
Your Nikon DSLR: the beginning of your photographic adventures
When you own a Nikon DSLR, you don’t just own a camera. You have the chance to explore a whole new world of photography. From legendary NIKKOR lenses to easy-to-use Nikon flash units and more, your DSLR is part of an endlessly expandable system that can grow with you. The quality of NIKKOR lenses is a key advantage of a Nikon DSLR over every other type of camera, and the D3400 is compatible with a wide range of DX-format NIKKORs, which cover just about every possible shooting situation. Use a fast prime lens for beautiful background blur, a telephoto lens for distant subjects, or a wide-angle lens for dramatic composition. When you’re ready to explore the creative potential of light, Nikon’s acclaimed Speedlights make it easy to do so. These portable flash units make it simple to diffuse or soften light, add impact to daylight images, enhance twilight shots or expose subject detail in backlit situations.
Go cinematic: full HD movies
With the D3400, shooting photos is only half the fun. When the occasion calls for video, the camera’s D-Movie function lets you record smooth, finely detailed Full HD videos at frame rates up to 50p/60p. Continuous autofocus keeps footage perfectly sharp when the action gets going. And you can easily film street scenes at night, or record the fun at indoor parties, thanks to the camera’s wide ISO light-sensitivity range. If you want to add a little drama, Nikon’s range of DX NIKKOR lenses make it easy to create cinematic-looking movies that will be the envy of anyone you show them to. Shoot with a fast DX prime NIKKOR lens like the AF-S DX NIKKOR 35 mm f/1.8G and enjoy the chance to put your subject in the spotlight against beautiful background blur. Shoot with the AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55 mm kit lens, and you can capture video footage with virtually no drive noise.
The Nikon DSLR advantage: precision and beauty
It’s only when you use a Nikon DSLR that you get the speed, precision and handling to shoot so brilliantly, so easily. Whether you’re up close or shooting from afar, the camera’s razor-sharp autofocus (AF) system will quickly lock onto your subject and keep it in focus. When the action starts, the D3400 can shoot at a swift 5 fps, capturing five beautiful images for every second. Legendary NIKKOR lenses consistently deliver shots that explode with colour and clarity. And Nikon’s world-renowned ergonomics ensure key controls are easily accessible. Thanks to the camera’s optical viewfinder, composing photos is much more rewarding than when shooting with a smartphone or compact camera. This is when photography really feels like photography: put your eye to the viewfinder and you get a clear view through the lens. The viewfinder blocks out sunlight and distractions so you can focus on your subject. Shooting through the viewfinder also means you maintain a stable hold on the camera and can achieve steadier shots, especially when shooting distant subjects with a longer lens.
Get creative: in-camera special effects and picture controls
The D3400 is well equipped to help you get creative. Ten different in-camera effects make it easy to capture images with an artistic touch. Simply choose the effect you want to apply before you shoot. The in-camera retouch menu gives you the freedom to quickly add atmospheric effects afterwards. And for more advanced options, you can use in-camera Picture Controls to fine-tune settings like contrast and saturation for images that look just the way you want them to. You can also crop your shots on the spot, simply by pressing the i button during zoom playback. And the camera’s SnapBridge connectivity lets you take advantage of your smartphone or tablet to continue the creative process. With seamless photo syncing, it’s easier than ever to review your creations on your smart device, or edit your images further in your favourite app.

First, the image quality is truly superb. Without getting too technical, the sensor (APS-C size) is huge compared to cameras and most compact cameras, which means it captures much more light and detail. The resolution (24mp) is far more than any non-professional would need, and printing these photos out A3 and onto canvases at home works a treat. If ultimately what you want is the sort of images of kids, holidays, pets, landscapes that make you say "wow, that wasn't taken on a smartphone", you can stop right there and hit "buy with one click".
The auto focus is fantastic and performs pretty well in low light (especially using the centre AF point). Not pro-quality autofocus (especially on subject tracking), but more than fast enough for most uses, and shooting at 5 frames per second is fantastic for an entry level camera. The camera is pretty amazing in low light, and this is where you will notice a real difference from a camera phone - that big sensor captures a lot of light! I have found it gives great images up to iso6400, although it goes as high as iso25,000.Read more ›
At first glance, there are lots of great things about this camera - it's lightweight (surprisingly so) yet it does not feel cheap, features a massive 24 megapixels sensor, and the latest Nikon technology within the camera. It's always good to get the latest features (especially if you will use it for many years) but this seems to exclude sensor cleaning (which was on the D3300, this camera's predecessor). In terms of lenses, it takes the Nikon full size and APS-size lenses, which means it will be compatible with any future gear you may get.
In terms of the lens itself, the 18-55 lens is okay, but it is entry level. Focusing is nice and quick, but I find the need to turn the collar before you start using the lens a bit of a pain. It's fine for a starter lens though. Image results have been very good.
Back to the body, and all the SLR features you would expect are on there, albeit less focal points and less continuous shooting than the higher spec ones. As a starter camera it's fine though. One of the key aspects of a starter SLR is introducing the photographer to different photo types (eg. portraits, children, landscape, fast moving action). This is handled by the dial on top of the camera and works well... I really recommend using this ahead of the auto mode as the photos will be better.Read more ›
I'd start by saying this camera is perfect for bloggers or Instagrammers who want to develop their photography skills past a compact camera or phone camera. This Nikon is lightweight and allows you to shoot in low light with impressive results. The kit lens it is supplied with is fine, the picture quality is crisper and better than I was expecting - but to get really punchy portraits with an aperture of 2.8, it's definitely worth investing in the Nikon 50mm prime lens.
The camera includes a retouch menu where you can select images after they are taken and apply a range of filters/effects including miniature, selective, colour sketch, fisheye and more. Not to my personal taste but fun to play around with.
The downside for me is the SnapBridge feature. Having the option to Bluetooth your images from your camera direct to your phone is so handy in some situations where you want to see and edit pictures quickly. I cannot get this to work (and I have tried numerous times over many days). The app gets very poorly rated so it appears to be a problem that not just I am experiencing. It's not the end of the world as an SD card reader will allow you to easily transfer your images to computer/mobile devices but it's a shame as it's an appealing part of the camera package.
The manual is clear which is great as I find it's always the most important starting point in getting to know your camera. I really like the operating screen which clearly shows your settings as you line up your shot.Read more ›
