Faster autofocus speeds
Successor to the well-received COOLPIX P7000, the COOLPIX P7100 offers improved image quality, reduced time lag, faster autofocus speeds, and quicker start up times. A new tilting 7.5 cm (3-in.) 921k-dot high-resolution LCD monitor makes it easier to compose images and capture attention-grabbing movies when shooting from unusual angles or tricky vantage points
Superb image quality
The COOLPIX P7100 boasts a raft of advanced technology more commonly found in D-SLR cameras to ensure the best image quality available. Its large 1/1.7" sensor and EXPEED C2 image processing system gives enhanced low light performance and movie recording. The 7.1x zoom NIKKOR lens has two ED glass elements to reduce chromatic aberration and fringing at longer focal lengths, and a Natural Density filter for greater exposure control. The fast EXPEED C2 image processing engine fully leverages the large CCD image sensor for superb resolution, fine details and cleaner images with less noise, whether you're shooting at high (up to 3200 and 12800 ISO) or low sensitivity settings.
Cross Processing
The COOLPIX P7100 has a range of special effects to shoot still images in, including Cross Processing that manipulates the colours for images with dramatic colour shifts and increased contrast and saturation, and Selective Colour that lets you emphasise a colour of your choice and turns the rest of the image to monochrome. To make sure you get the look you want, you can review your choice of effect on the LCD screen before shooting.

Advanced HD movie capabilities
The COOLPIX P7100's optical zoom and autofocus are available during recording at a rate of 24fps. The white balance can be set before recording and an AE (auto exposure) lock allows the exposure to be set and locked at any time. Supports an external microphone and an HDMI output.
To ensure high-quality films when you're on the move, the COOLPIX P7100 records in HD (720p) with optical zoom and autofocus, and offers frame rates of 24fps. So that scenes are captured exactly as you want them, it is possible to set the white balance before recording begins and also use the Auto Exposure (AE) lock to set your preferred auto exposure at any time during shooting.
The COOLPIX P7100 also features a built-in HDMI connector with HDMI-CEC support for output to a HDTV and supports the use of an external microphone. The COOLPIX P7100 is available in black.

I really like this camera and I've had many since my first venture into Digital Photography back in year 2001. Back then even a small shirt pocket digital cost around £800.
This Nikon has a lovely well-built chunky feel but isn't too bulky or too heavy to carry around like a compact camera. The controls are not at all fiddly. Easy to find and it needs no fumbling even with big hands. The tilting viewfinder is very useful especially for not drawing attention to yourself when taking photos that are pointing in the direction of members of the public. It's also handy for shooting photos looking straight up the side of buildings or up a tree! Optical viewfinder is always useful if you're getting a bit dodgy on your eyesight and need something to help when sunlight is so bright you can't see the LCD screen well. All digital LCD screens seem to suffer from that.
The camera is very easy to set it up for your most common settings. I like to have Manual Focus over-ride easily at hand and this can be found easily from all settings except AUTO shooting mode.
There's a handy EV light value dial on the top to quickly set your own exposure levels according to light.
I also like the Infinity Close-Up Auto-focus quick setting menu.
I've ordered a Remote control as this camera will be great for doing wildlife shots on a tripod whilst you back off and hide awaiting that crucial shot.
Video side works well. But what stunned me most was the quality in HDMI when the pictures on the camera card are displayed on the HD Television. Fabulous quality.
I also discovered that you can put photos back onto the camera card and display them again on the TV at a later time but you have to save the originals full size and not Edit them or change their name.
You can of course save two versions of the photos you take off the card onto the PC or Mac. Edit them but keep your favourites as an un-edited original somewhere. Then when you copy them back to an empty SD card and put it back in the camera, then hook up to your TV the camera will recognise the photos by their proper name and by them not being altered or changed in any way by the computer.
Today I discovered something else it can do. You can view a photo you have already taken, and whilst it's displaying on the camera screen zoom it to a portion of the photo you would like a new snapshot of, and using the menu it has a choice to make a new copy of the current view. So it's a form of sophisticated cropping.
So that is what I think of this camera so far. I've used it for a week and the battery is still half charged and not run down flat. Given that it only takes 1.5 hrs to fully charge it, that's got to be a high performance battery - At last say I !
I hope to have a long and happy relationship with this my first ever Nikon. It makes a good photographer out of a mediocre amateur. I can heartily recommend it to anyone who thinks they might like a DSLR but can't face having a large camera with heavy lenses on the front that feels like carrying a breeze block strung around your neck.
Well done Nikon for making a supreme product.
So I'm still playing and learning, but if I need a quick photo I can just select the green auto mode and the camera does the rest, usually with outstanding results. Compared to my earlier P&S cameras the P7100 works particularly well in low light conditions. Took over 500 stills and a couple of short movies during a recent week in the Lake District and only had to re-charge the battery once. Based on this and the cost, I'll probably not buy a spare battery - it seems that many 3rd party batteries do not work with the P7100, but I would be interested if anyone has found one that does?
It has a solid quality build feel to it, much heavier and bulkier than your simple P&S but nowhere as heavy and bulky as a DSLR. This is the perfect compromise between those extreme ends of camera equipment. I have since bought several accessories for it, not Nikon originals because of their steep prices - see all my reviews.
If you're not used to complex cameras like myself you may find the learning curve a bit steep but stick with it as the results are well worth it.
