Colour Name: Red
Created for those who love capturing every detail, the portable yet powerful COOLPIX P600 from Nikon combines exquisite precision and a super-zoom lens that is set to impress. An astounding 60x optical zoom lens is complemented by a long list of Nikon advanced technologies and fantastic new features. Advanced Lens Shift Vibration Reduction, a Smart AF autofocus algorithm, and Focus Peaking all help deliver finely detailed, beautifully sharp, still images and Full HD movies. And when you’re ready to boast about your new picture-perfect camera, built-in Wi-Fi makes it easy to instantly share on email or social media networks via your smart device.
Available in red or black, the exciting COOLPIX P600 is sophisticated performance made simple.
Ultimate Zoom Power
Offering the highest zoom ratio in COOLPIX history, the 24-1440mm 60x optical zoom captures an enormous variety of scenes, covering everything from stunning landscapes to defined markings on distant wildlife. If it is at all possible to need even more reach, zoom up to 120x with Dynamic Fine Zoom while still maintaining maximum image resolution. Getting the very best from the lens in low light, the back-illuminated 16 Megapixel CMOS sensor combined with the EXPEED C2 image processing system offers both impressive noise reduction and high-speed performance, resulting in sharp, detailed images that are perfect for photo or poster enlargements.
Another first for the COOLPIX range is the use of a Super ED lens element. More often found in professional D-SLR lenses, a single super-ED glass lens element, combined with four other ED glass elements in the COOLPIX P600, offers superior chromatic-aberration correction to yield superb image quality and maximum resolution, even at high zoom ratios. When shooting at the longest focal lengths you’ll be amazed at the effectiveness of the Advanced Lens-Shift Vibration Reduction (VR) and with Active mode, camera shake is effectively minimised when walking or shooting from a moving vehicle.
Dual Viewing System
Recognising that shooting conditions vary, the COOLPIX P600 has two viewing systems. On the bright 7.5cm (3 inch) 921k-dot vari-angle screen, you can swivel the display to almost any position to provide unique perspectives whether overhead or at ground-level. To frame a specific scene, switch to the 201k-dot Electronic Eye-Level viewfinder and help stabilise your posture, minimise camera shake, and make precise framing easier when shooting in strong sunlight.
Instant Photo Sharing
Posting pictures on social media sites to tell a story is becoming the social norm, but with the COOLPIX P600 you don’t just share pictures, you share outstanding images that stand out from the smartphone crowd. With integrated Wi-Fi you can transfer photos and movies directly to your smart device, and text, email, or upload them to your favourite social networking sites. You can even use your smartphone or tablet as a remote control making self-portrait shots simple.
Capture the Action
The Nikon COOLPIX P600 is designed to keep up. Easy access to key camera settings via a customisable function button and an impressive AF speed means it really is ready for anything. With intelligent new features like the Smart AF algorithm which improves focus detection in lower light at high-speeds, and the multitask processor which allows your second shot to be taken while your first image is still being processed, you can always catch key moments perfectly without delay. And don’t forget the array of Continuous Shooting modes that help make sure you never miss that perfect shot.
The COOLPIX P600 will satisfy any budding director looking for something portable yet versatile. At the touch of a button you can shoot Full HD (1080p) video with stereo sound and take full advantage of the optical zoom with autofocus to create the perfect scene. Creative control is maintained with options to film in slow or fast motion, shoot stills while you’re recording, or use the record pause function to take a break in filming. To top it off, HDMI connectivity ensures your clear, crisp video can be enjoyed directly on HD televisions.
Explore the Possibilities
With the COOLPIX P600 you can bring dramatic scenes to life. By selecting any of the 21 Scene modes to match your situation, you can optimise the camera settings to achieve fantastic shots. Shoot dynamic panoramas either vertically or horizontally across a scene in Easy Panorama 360°/180° mode or use one of the two new scene modes, Moon and Bird-watching, to enjoy hand-held super-telephoto shooting at its best. Whether you prefer to take full advantage of the auto-mode function, use the many retouch filter effects like Soft Portrait or Photo Illustration, or take greater creative control with one of the PSAM modes, you will enjoy producing striking photographs and movies with simplistic ease.
A variety of practical in-camera tools help to make the most of every shooting opportunity and ensure your pictures are captured to perfection. HDR (High Dynamic Range) controls overexposure and underexposure to render a well-balanced, natural image with little noise and with an extended range of tones. While in Macro mode you can focus on subjects as close as 1cm to capture the smallest of details. In manual focus, the new Focus Peaking feature emphasises the edges of the focused area in white so you can easily view the setup on-screen and adjust the focus to capture the perfect shot.
Long Lasting Fun
Designed to maximise the time you spend taking great photos and videos, the COOLPIX P600 is equipped with a high-capacity rechargeable Li-Ion Battery, offering up to 330 shots at full resolution in a single charge. I didn't have a chance to try the updated model (P520), but now I have had a shoot with the P600 I'll convey some thoughts on the camera, I've had a few days shooting with the P600 so can give some idea of how things are stacking up. I will update the reivew should anything arise longer term. This was a gift for a good friend who has the camera, but I managed to grab it for a few days to try.
My impressions so far are:
+ Epic zoom range, 60x... 24-1440mm (35mm equivalent range), a range that has to be seen to be believed! Distant blobs become real objects zooming in. Great fun for big zoom fans
+ Build is decent up to the quality I would expect on a camera like this, the LCD monitor is a good fully articulated 3" 921k nice and sharp looking
+ Image quality, a big one it's quite good really for a 1/2.3-in 16mp small CMOS sensor. Usual rules apply here viewing images at 100% on screen won't blow you away, and it's not going to give you DSLR IQ by a long shot. But...for the sensor size it's quite respectable. Even ISO 800 is quite good, 1600 is pushing things more than a bit. With careful processing you can improve things a little, or reduce resolution to 8mp for lower light shots
+ AF was quite quick in good light, but takes longer telephoto end as expect for a camera like this. Probably good enough for experienced bird shooters (I'm not a bird shooter being honest)
+ Well featured in most respects, tons of scenes and modes (which I would rarely use myself) Face detection helps with exposure and AF, flash exposures were quite decent.Read more ›
OK, bad stuff out of the way first. This camera is slow. The zoom, autofocus (particularly in low light) and transfer to SD are all pretty sluggish. Zoom is also a little noisy and the EVF is pretty average. Oh, and forget shooting much over ISO 400.
If operational performance is your priority this is probably not the camera for you. If, however, image quality and phenomenal optical zoom appeal then read on.
I'm a keen amatuer phtographer and currently have a Panasonic FZ200 and Canon 7D with various lenses including the L series 100-400mm. I bought the P600 with a view to possibly replacing the FZ200 and have been comparing the two.
My main interest is wildlife and whilst I use the Canon 7D to capture decent quality "keepers" the very portable FZ200 is used to record and assist with identifying animals and birds in the wild.
The FZ200 has a better EVF and is a little quicker to focus and zoom than the P600 but, if image quality is important to you, the P600 wins hands down for any photography where long reach is important.
The P600 zoom transforms the "bird in the bush" to a "bird in the hand" (should probably flog that to Nikon) and produces, to my eye, very acceptable images. The 60x optical zoom is incredible and even at quite low shutter speeds the camera's vibration reduction system allows sharp images without the need for a tripod. With like for like testing on distant birds/animals the P600's superior zoom produces better images than the FZ200 every time - even with low light levels.
Now the best bit.Read more ›
The P600 is sluggish, and in some areas ridiculously so : in continuous shooting mode, for example, take 7 continuous shots with the P510 and in 6 seconds it is ready to take photos again. Do the same with the P600 and you will wait 32 seconds (!). You can miss an awful lot in 32 seconds! I thought my example was faulty but have verified that it is in fact how the P600 is. Video using the huge zoom is no problem on the P510 - the P600, however, struggles to focus on long zooms and indeed sometimes just gives up, leaving you shooting out of focus until you pull the zoom back. Again, I have verified that this is a problem with the P600 and not just mine. There are also a couple of third party review sites where the reviewer states the same issues.
WiFi has replaced the GPS in the P510, but I found it unreliable using my iPhone. By the way, don't think that the wifi is like your home wifi network (i.e. on the net and accessible to all) - the P600 creates a local wifi network of its own and then your smartphone joins that. I also found that if you were more than a few meters away (i.e. using the remote shutter release for wildlife) then the connection was often lost.
I realise that all of this is negative and to clarify, the P600 is still a great camera - providing that you haven't owned a previous model!Read more ›
