The build is solid and its very small compared to other primes of this range so it's great for keeping on you iof you want to change whilst out and about. This is a great lens and one of those that everyone should try at some point.
He tells me that it is easy to use with plenty of user control over it. For the price (at the time 100GBP) it was good value for money. The results I have seen are very good; bright colourful and clear pictures, pin point sharpness and a good range of depth of field. As someone who has a lot more experience than I have he was very pleased with it and said that had he known what it was like, he would have bought it a long time back.
The lens has now been in use for about 20 months and is still working well.
I have tested the lens for portrait shots of the family and it has performed very well producing very sharp images.
Its is fully compatible with my Nikon D50 and auto focus is fully functioning even when used with the extension tubes.
I prefer to use manual focus with this lens for greater control. The lens has a manual control for adjusting the aperture which is fantastic. This makes changing aperture settings a breeze and I feel assists you to get a better idea of what your adjustments are doing to your photos without having to mess with the internal camera settings.
I recommend this lens to anyone and is a must to have in your camera bag.
Its also very good value.
If you are in Live View then you will have to focus by eye - magnify the image on the Liveview screen for best results. The metering etc. works perfectly, the same as af-s lenses. I find that the extra task of focusing makes me feel more involved and adds to the satisfaction of taking good photographs. So far all my images have been in focus, even at f1.8 close up.
This lens is extraordinary - it takes wonderful photos, notably head and shoulder portraits. You will be able to see every whisker and pore as sharp as could be. Exposure is spot on and the colours are also superb. I find that I don't have to do much processing to the RAW images for them to look really good, just a very small tweak to the sharpening.
A surprise is that I haven't suffered from camera shake - I thought it would be a problem, but at the reasonable shutter speeds I have used - 125 or faster - so far it has not been an issue.
I love this lens - people say in their reviews that they find magic in some lenses - this is the one for me . I would give it 6 stars if I could, especially at the price.
I am a relative newcomer to digital SLR, but I know what a good lens can do - I also have Nikon AF 35mm 1.8g and the Sigma 17-50 2.8 os which are both excellent lenses. This lens is in the same league as those. It is a huge step up from the kit lens.
