Top customer reviews
If you troll the internet looking at review after review after review you will find many reasons not buy this lens.
For budding photographers spending their hard earn't cash on a lens they want to own for years and enjoy the results of, it is not easy to persuade those with little or no experience of a given lens to spend their cash, if negative reviews that only focus on lab results are the only thing they have to go by.
Here are the facts concerning the Nikon 20mm 2.8d
Firstly - it is light, small, well built with wonderful glass incorporated within it, when you know how to use it.
Secondly - yes in the corners it is a little soft when used at anything other than mid range apertures, I could pick fault with any lens if i wished to.
Thirdly - yes it is a little noisy when using auto focus, so what, its not that noisy, use it in manual then where you will find the focusing barrel to be lovely and smooth to use, in low light is when you will need the auto focus most, and so what if it is a little noisy, the auto focus is fast and snappy and very accurate,
I have owned mine for a few years now and use it on my d800, when used creatively this little Gem of a lens sparkles, Its resolution in the center wide open is remarkably sharp, contrast levels are superb, and everything just gets better and better all the way up to f11, after which diffraction starts to take its toll on Image quality.
If you want to spend your life reading lab results and reviews from people picking endless faults with everything in life then you will miss out on what this wonderful little lens is capable of.
On the other hand if you are type of person who just wants to get out there into the BIG WIDE world this lens will bring to you, then get out there and enjoy it.
Don't worry about the lenses distortion, use it to be creative, it is easily corrected for architectural photography if needed.
Remember, your camera is a tool, and so are your lenses, a bad workman will always blame his tools.
Use this little lens with thoughtfulness and creativity and it will defiantly not disappoint.
Learn its strengths and rejoice in them, I do with mine :-)
Here is a link to a couple of Image's I took with my 20mm 2.8d attached to my d800 of the inside of Winchester Cathedral.
I'm sharing these Images with you solely so you can see and understand what this little Gem is capable of.
Buy, cherish, and enjoy :-)
As you'd expect from such a long-standing Nikon prime lens design, optical quality is excellent. If access to high quality images at this focal length is your prime concern then this lens represents excellent value for money, particularly when compared with other Nikon routes to this focal length such as the mighty 14-24/f2.8. Images are sharp and contrasty right across the frame (FX). The only caveat being the curvy vericals at the edges of the frane, although these can now be cured electronically.
Despite the fact that it is an AF-D design, the small size of this prime lens means that AF speed is excellent - certainly comparabel with modern AF-S zooms.
I regularly tuck this cute little lens into my bag and have found it really useful when 35mm or 24mm are not wide enough and have never been disappointed by the quality of its images.
This is a great lens to have, so if considering a purchase, the only question to ask yourself is whether your photography regularly requires you to go beyond 24mm enough to make the pruchase worthwhile.
As other reviews have noted this lens in not the sharpest even considered against the 17-35mm but it's so light, so handy and so well made. Although it lacks sharpness at the corners it is in the centre of the frame so you just have to adapt your shooting style accordingly.
As the first reviewer has said it's wonderful in tight spots as well as doing group shots and getting real close thanks to the Close Range Correction focusing system.
Although it is old-school (in comparison the the new 'G' lenses) overall it's a wonderfully versatile, compact ultra-wide shooting solution for my lens on my D700.
