The Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-200 mm f/4-5.6 G ED VR II Lens is a collapsible telephoto zoom lens that boasts a serious size advantage. Compact, light and easy-to-handle, it's an ideal partner for smaller DX-format cameras.
With a flexible focal range up to 200 mm, this zoom lens is used for close-ups of distant subjects, travel shots, sporting adventures and amateur wildlife photography. The streamlined body means you can shoot telephoto without carrying heavy gear and the retractable lens mechanism lets you collapse the lens for additional portability. The optical construction delivers dynamic, high-contrast images, and autofocus is fast, precise and super-quiet. Crucially for a telephoto lens, Nikon's Vibration Reduction system enables blur-free images, even when shooting at the far end of the telephoto range.
The NIKKOR 55-200 mm is a way to discover the creative advantages of shooting telephoto. Get right in the middle of the action at sporting events, capture wildlife from afar, isolate subjects against impressive cityscapes or close in on the drama when filming a movie. The compact build makes this an especially comfortable lens to handle and the high-quality optical construction produces beautifully sharp photos and videos even when shooting handheld. For extra reach without the extra weight, it doesn't get much lighter than this.
Designed to enable more stable handheld shooting, Nikon's Vibration Reduction system lets you shoot at up to four stops slower, without the image-degrading blur that can be caused by camera shake. A way to counter the effects of camera shake is essential when shooting telephoto and Nikon's VR technology is renowned for its ability to deliver clear, blur-free images at any focal length. It helps immensely when you shoot in low light, or when you're zooming in to capture distant subjects.
Engineered to draw high performance from your DX-format camera, the AF-S NIKKOR 55-200 mm lens delivers quality results every time. The optical design features 13 elements in nine groups, including an extra-low dispersion glass element that helps minimise chromatic aberration for high-contrast images. Nikon's compact Silent Wave Motor (SWM) technology enables quiet, fast and accurate autofocus performance, which is a particular advantage when shooting wildlife or movies.
Weighing just 300 g, the NIKKOR 55-200 mm is a mere 83 mm long when retracted, which is seriously small for a telephoto zoom lens. For those seeking a lightweight general telephoto lens, this NIKKOR also makes an ideal companion lens for the NIKKOR 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 G VR II zoom lens. Combine a small D-SLR camera with these two lenses and you have a powerful double zoom kit that won't weigh down your bag.

Dynamic Zoom Coverage
Choosing the lens that best suits your skill level and creative pursuits is a vital part of your photographic journey. The AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-200 mm f/4-5.6G ED VR II is an enhanced lens that ensures Nikon DX-format SLRs achieve peak performance. With a 5.5x zoom and flexible 55-200 mm focal range, this lens offers a better way to discover the creative advantages of shooting telephoto. Ideal for capturing wildlife from afar, impressive cityscapes and the action on the sports field, you can get up-close to distant subjects with stunning results.
With a telephoto zoom lens such as this, Nikon’s exclusive second generation Vibration Reduction system (VR II) is invaluable, enabling steady hand-held shooting at all focal lengths. Delivering sharp photos and video, VR II allows you to use shutter speeds up to four stops slower than would otherwise be possible. Because VR II is an optical system, the viewfinder image is also stabilised, enabling more accurate autofocus acquisition and framing. Leave your tripod at home and shoot with confidence, safe in the knowledge that the AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-200 mm f/4-5.6G ED VR II lens will produce photos of higher sharpness and colour, even in low light.
Delivering the clarity and detail your photography deserves, the lens comprises 13 elements in niune groups, in a design incorporating one extra-low dispersion (ED) glass element. The ED element helps minimise chromatic aberration in high-contrast images while the rounded seven-blade diaphragm creates a soft rendering effect, producing high-quality natural backgrounds. This clever optical construction delivers vivid, high resolution images you can be proud of.
Ideal for travel, this ultra-compact and lightweight lens is a mere 83 mm long when retracted and weighs just 300 g.
An extra-low dispersion glass element helps minimise chromatic aberration for high-contrast, beautifully sharp, Nikon-quality photos and videos.
Vibration Reduction (VR II) enables more stable handheld shooting and lets you shoot up to four stops slower, for clear and blur-free images.
Nikon's AF-S technology is yet another reason why photographers like NIKKOR lenses. Nikon’s exclusive Silent Wave Motor (SWM) converts travelling waves into rotational energy to focus the optics. This enables high-speed autofocusing that’s extremely accurate and super quiet. So for discrete shooting you can set up the shot in an instant and camera focusing won’t disturb sensitive subjects like wildlife.
The AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-200 mm f/4-5.6G ED VR II lens was built with portability in mind. Thanks to an enhanced retractable barrel design, the lens measures a mere 83 mm when retracted, providing well-balanced handling at a weight of just 300 g. Allowing for this more compact design, Nikon's Internal focus (IF) technology limits all the optical movement to the interior of the non-extending lens barrel. This intelligent system enables a close minimum focus distance to be retained throughout the zoom range at just 1.1 m.
With a more compact design and versatile focal range, the AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-200 mm f/4-5.6G ED VR II lens from Nikon is the go-to multipurpose lens.

I needed a lens that did the extra zoom, After reading reviews and lookin at my budget the 55-200mm kit is brilliant for what I need, I would love to have the Nikon 55-300 kit but that is well over my budget, The lens itself when attached to the camera does not stick out much further than the standard kit that came with the camera, Maybe an extra 20mm so its great for putting in a camera case.
So the important part, Autofocus is powered by a silent wave motor, and auto focus speeds are pretty quick for a lens of this budget level.
The centre sharpness of the pictures is fantastic at most focal lengths, At maximum aperture and 55mm, sharpness is excellent across the frame, Changing the aperture to f/8 gives you great performance,
Zooming to 105mm results in a reduction of performance at maximum aperture. Here sharpness is very good in the centre, Changed the aperture again to f/8, performance at this focal length is much improved. Here sharpness is outstanding in the centre,
For best results at 200mm I went to f/11, The sharpness and quality of the image at this length is fantastic, Of course it helps having the Vibration Reduction switched on, Close-up performance is also pretty decent for a non-macro lens,
All In all this is a very good lens for the price, If your a novice like me, Then you will love it.
The picture taken of the moon is zoomed right up to 200mm, No tripod involved just my hand, The shot was taken in Auto mode and with the VR switched on, I have then cropped the picture on my PC, The pic shows how much detail you can get from this fantastic lens.
Covers majority of focal lengths you need to start off with. Will be using at Silverstone at the F1 grand Prix, will update with shots.
Of course, I'm talking as a beginner with an entry-level DSLR
Very good product and a very good price - well recommended.
