This is McCoy Tyner at his best. The blues are traditional but yet have his signature all over them. The ballads are gentle, tuneful and full of emotion. I bought this CD on a whim, having only heared a limmited amout of Tyner previously, and was enthralled. A wonderful CD to buy either as an introduction to mellow Jazz, or to the great pianist himself. A must for your collection.

This is not only my favourite McCoy Tyner record but also one of my best loved jazz albums. It's the perfect late night record - gentle soothing vibes to help you come down at the end of the working week.

The opener Satin Doll sets the scene, Tyner working his magic. Three tracks in and you get one of the best interpretations of Round Midnight. Really good stuff.

If you are looking for a simple and intimate jazz set then this McCoy Tyner trio delivers the goods. Highly recommended.

Anybody who loves Jazz will love this. Of course there is Oscar Petersen, Ramsey Lewis, the great Count and many, many more but McCoy Tyner touches the spot for me. No further comments necessary. Enjoy.

HASH(0x8e626f00) out of 5 stars Be truly wisked away into happiness 22 Jun. 2000
By Erik Berkule - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
The heart of this recording has to be McCoy's rendition of Round Midnight. Although done so many times as a jazz standard, McCoy breathes so much life into this version that the listener can't help but fall in love.
The rest of the album is spectacular as well, with McCoy demonstrating his solo ability in not-so-rare form. While many folks only know Tyner as a Coltrane sideman, others know his amazing capacity to engulf the audience in soulful ballads and high tempo acrobatics.
The muted picture on the album cover connotes the mystical feeling you be given while listening to this must-have for any jazz fan.

HASH(0x8e626f54) out of 5 stars A cool Jazz album from a great jazz pianist. 8 Sept. 2000
By Todd Hampton - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
One of my favorite jazz albums because it is so cool. McCoy tyner who at that time was more widely known for being and integral part of the John Coltrane Quartet proved that he definetley had the goods to make albums under his own name. Nights of ballads and blues was Tyners third solo album. The album is just that an selection of blues and ballad. Tyner along with Steve davis and Lex Humphries play a group of Jazz standards. The outcome while not breathtaking is still beautiful to listen to. The beauty in listening to this Cd is hearing how the 'melodically inventive' Tyner and the rest of his trio sound together. Not a note feels wasted, but each song sounds unique. A real treat.

HASH(0x8fc2afcc) out of 5 stars A jazz milestone 22 Nov. 2009

I bought McCoy Tyners "Nights of Ballads and Blues" way back in 1966. It was my introduction to jazz and this disc went to just about every party I went to for several years, it was the perfect accompanyment to seeing in the wee small hours of the morning.
Eventually it became unplayable as I moved to compact disc, I was overjoyed to find it on Amazon albeit coming from the States. My new disc is a perfect reproduction and reproduces all the original sleeve notes.
Excellent packaging ensured safe arrival just a few weeks after my order. I recommend this record to all who want to hear jazz in its purest form.

I just discovered the beautiful music of McCoy Tyner. I picked up an old McCoy Tyner LP, put it on, and was literally blown away. This CD is one of his best. An absolute must for serious jazz enthusiasts and lovers of great music.

HASH(0x8e4e6a98) out of 5 stars Intimate and beautiful 7 Jun. 2013
By Mike Tarrani - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
The track selection is as wonderful as the musicianship on every track. I would be hard pressed to pick a favorite because each track seems to speak to me.

I am reviewing the CD format which has no sound samples (at the time of this review) on the product page. Listen to the sound samples on the product page for the MP3 album of Nights Of Ballads & Blues. You will be treated to short sound snippets that are representative of each track. Those snippets tell more about the music and the sound quality than I possibly can.

Aside from Tyner's exceptional piano interpretations of songs that are all standards I enjoyed closely studying Lex Humphries' technique on drums. He is sadly forgotten in most circles, but is tasteful and a master on brushes. I'll confess that I know very little of bassist Steve Davis, but his playing perfectly fit with the songs selected and the rest of the ensemble.

The album was recorded at Rudy van Gelder's Englewood Cliffs, NJ studio on March 4, 1963 and released later that year. Although this album clocks in at under thirty-nine minutes each note is a pleasure to my ears. If you love the sound samples I pointed out above you will definitely love this album.
