If you didn't know this story was true, you would never believe it!

The courage, integrity and determination of newspaper correspondent Bill Shirer and his Austrian wife, Tess, as they faced the growing antisemitism and tyranny of the Nazi regime in 1930s Germany, are an inspiration for us lesser mortals.

Shirer faced increasing hostility from the Nazi propaganda machine as he strove to produce truthful reports for his American newpaper, and was eventually dismissed for refusing to compromise by a US media community in denial. Yet miraculously an opening for his message appeared in the new field of live radio, through which Shirer was able to reach an even greater audience than before.

He and Tess hid a Jewish family in their flat and managed to get them safely out of Berlin. They themselves finally had to flee Germany separately, Shirer eventually joining his wife in Portugal. Shirer escaped only seconds ahead of a Gestapo raid on his rented flat. He smuggled out his war memoirs in a trunk which he sent ahead via Gestapo headquarters!

You'll be on the edge of your seat throughout at the audacity and tenacity of this man, and will be challenged by his amazing courage. The insights it gives into a society descending into madness are spellbinding, and his books and war diaries are regarded as a foremost source document for the Third Reich.

It really is better than most fictional thrillers. Watch it; buy it; lend it to your friends!

This mini series about an American Journalist in Berlin, during the rise of Hitler, has you rivited to your seat. It is a true story and just shows how the West were ignorant of what was actually going on in Germany, under Hitler. The German propagander establishment under the charge of Gobels, dictated what foreign journalist's were allowed to write about the Nazi Regime. This four disc set is well worth buying and it is one of those films you can watch over and over again when the mood takes you. The only gripe I have, is the rather long uneccessary introduction to each part, which you have to sit through. Put the kettle on and make a cup of tea, and you will just be in time to watch the start of the episode. Why these repetitive long introductions have to be put into each episode always spoils a good film. Once at the start of Episode one, would have been quite sufficient. This film comes in about six different languages and you can choose to have subtitles on or off.

This is an excellent film with first class actors especially Sam Waterston. It gives a very accurate impression of 1930's Berlin and the tightening rule of the Nazis not only in Germany but on neighbouring countries. The only criticism I have is the rather long introduction of newsreel footage to each episode. I would recommend this DVD to anyone interested in that critical period in European and consequently World history.

Some of these series can fail to stand the test of time; The Nightmare Years still stands scrutiny. It focuses on particular aspects of life in a tyranny, in the context of the wider events. I enjoyed the first screening on TV, I enjoyed watching the DVD, and will no doubt, enjoy it the next time I watch it as well.

Outstanding summary of W.L. Shirers experiences in Berlin from 1935 to 1940 when he and his family finally escaped from the Nazis to get to Lisbon and from there to their home in the USA. Would recommend this DVD to anyone interested in German history over that period. Yet the world especially in the USA chose to ignore what was happening as Hitler began to prepare for outright war in Europe. The casting for this story cannot be faulted, neither the setting in Hungary. Brilliant.

Sam Waterston at his best, a very realistic depiction of the early days of pre war subtifuge and a guide to how National governments can panic people.

This film was released in 1989 so quality wise if reflects its age just a little bit. It is heavily based on the book "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" by William Shirer, "The Nightmare Years" tells the story of William Shirer who was an American journalist based in Berlin during the second world war. He, like all other journalists based there, had to report regularly to the ministry of propaganda and meet with Joseph Goebbels, indeed Goebbels decided what would get published by them and the rules were strict, they had to tow the 'party line'. Sam Waterston plays William Shirer.

I found the film to be a little too perfect, too relaxed and could have embodied more of the stress and hardship of the period. It runs for 374 minutes and I struggled to see it through to the end, I did, but I was yawning.
