I'm not sure if I felt any affinity with Rachel or even liked her particularly but the author certainly paints a believable and brilliant picture of what it's like being the `other woman'. Rachel's infatuation Steve manages to permeate every aspect of her life and she just can't help but thinking about the possibility of having him all to herself. She reminds me a lot of many of the crush-type experiences you have when you're 13-14 but this is adult life and she's managed to make her way through a marriage and been without Steve for seventeen years yet the feeling is still there.
This novel is brilliantly written, all Rachel's deepest darkest feelings are displayed and there's no softening of the blows by the author as Rachel's heart is shattered time and again. The ending too is perfectly fitting. Really enjoyable.
I love the writing style and character descriptions. I could almost picture in my mind what they looked like. I found it hard to put down as I wanted to know what happened next. This involved a few nights of reading into the early hours. The theme of the book held me engrossed. Not only did I want to know what happens to the main character I was also drawn into the lives of other characters.
A thoroughly enjoyable read and can't wait for the next book.
But Kathryn did not deliver the predictable, and that's what made this book for me. I didn't finish it thinking, well, that was a good story but I kind of guessed the ending half way through. I didn't do that with this book.
Nightingale Woods is a romance with a difference, and one that I would highly recommend. It was the first book of Kathryn's that I have read, but it definitely won't be the last. A wonderful read!
The story is told in two parts, the first via the diary of an impressionable girl in her early twenties who falls passionately in love with a married man and whose affair with him does not end as she would have expected. The second half fast-forwards to Rachel (the main character) living her life in a new area many years later.
I'm loathe to say much more than this as I don't want to spoil the plot. Needless to say this book has been very cleverly written and does not end the way that I expected it to. A very insightful book which is entertaining and quite sad at the same time yet shows how one woman can overcome much, including a broken heart.
I highly recommend this title and having read it will be buying the author's other title, Discovery At Rosehill to read.
