Although The Nightingale Nurses can most certainly be read as a stand-alone novel, and the author gives enough background information to enable new readers to enjoy the story, I would definitely recommend that you read the first two books in the series first.

Once again Donna Douglas has produced a warm and quite captivating story featuring Helen, Dora and Millie; three student nurses who are from very different backgrounds but have found themselves living and working together for the past three years.

It is the final year of what has been three incredibly tough years, both professionally and personally for each of the girls. Helen is still dealing with her overbearing Mother, a woman who cannot help but interfere in Helen's life. Dora is distraught, her one true love is now married to her best friend and Millie is worried about her reporter boyfriend Seb who is overseas covering war stories.

The detail in this story is excellent, from the fashion, to the workings of a hospital to the political tensions caused by Moseley's 'Blackshirts' - the reader is firmly thrust into this changing world which is brought to life quite brilliantly.

I have really enjoyed the development of the characters in the Nightingale series, not just the three leading nurses, but the supporting cast has grown too. It is probably Helen's mother who is the surprise of this story, still domineering and still obnoxious, but her past is gradually revealed to the reader which adds another dimension to both her character and the plot line.

Drama, love, laughter and many tears. A finely tuned plot and some larger than life characters. The Nightingale Nurse is a fine addition to the series and is my favourite so far. I do hope that Donna Douglas will be writing more about the girls, I'm really keen to know where they go next.

As claimed - The whole series read by my wife on her new Kindle Paperwhite
She is now reading more books than ever before as she finds the format very friendly.

Being a Nurse she has some similar experiences of her own - but loves to read of the drams and difficulties faced by colleagues in tougher times.
She enjoyed this very much but never writes a proper review.
As I paid for them - I am!

Got in touch with Donna herself over this book as it is 54 chapters long and the same chapters are from book two which I have already read,,I thought I had a faulty copy but checking the first page here there is no mistake..can someone please enlighten me as to why this book three is the same last 54 chapters on book two...Donna advised me to get in touch with the publishers but when I checked their site they do not have an email address and it is many years since I wrote a letter...have amazon any idea how this has happened....as the titles are not the same so cannot be a mix up there....

I have read the previous two novels in this series, The Nightingale Girls and The Nightingale Sisters, and I found them hard to put down.
In fact, I like to read when I go to bed and found I was going to bed earlier and earlier just so I could spend more time reading without having a late night!
This book did not disappoint and picked up from where the previous story concluded.
I would recommend these series of novels to anyone who enjoys a story set in the 1930s and gradually into the War Time era. They would also appeal to anyone who enjoys the BBC series "Call the Midwife".
A great read from a consistently creative author. 10/10

The Nightingale Nurses written by Donna Douglas is the third book in this wonderful series and once again the author Donna Douglas has written a brilliant book filled with characters who we first met in the previous two books in this wonderful series. From page one we are brought back in time to Dora the nurse with a big heart who has her own heartache to live with while studying hard for her exams. Helen is learning the hard way to stand up to her domineering mother while growing in so many ways she is one character who I always loved to read about. Unfortunately Helen has heartache to come through while finally becoming the nurse she was born to be while other characters from pervious books also make an appearance there is also the fact that the Black Shirts are slowly spreading their evil throughout London under the leadership of Mosley and unfortunately for Dora the Black Shirts will have a horrible affect in her own family as well as those closest to her. I loved how the author showed how the Jewish faith was brought into this book as it really added to the story line.
This was another brilliant read by Donna Douglas who certainly knows the history of the Nightingale Hospital in London and how the nursing profession was so different from todays NHS nursing system. This is one book which had it all within the pages which included every emotion and a fantastic storyline which kept me hooked throughout.
If you have followed this series of books you already know how good they are and I have to say in my own personal opinion this is one series which improves as times goes on and now I am eagerly reading the fourth book
