Your 2013 just won't be complete without them 8.5/10 The 405 // Terrific GQ // After a triumphant festival season which has seen Public Service Broadcasting playing to packed stages and tents across the UK, the duo return this Autumn with Night Mail, the stand-out track from their critically-acclaimed debut album Inform - Educate Entertain . Their first long-player came in at #21 in the UK album chart in May 2013 and was nominated for Best Independent Album at AIM Awards 2013. 'Night Mail' is released as a special edition 12" EP, featuring two extended mixes. Ben Gomori takes the original and twists it into an altogether funkier beast, while Baltic Fleet take their mix into Flying Lotus territory with heavy synth washes before bursting out into a late night electro jam. The radio edit of the original finishes off the set - limited to 1,000 copies and sure to be a collectors' item. Ben Gomori is an eclectically minded house producer & DJ with releases for the likes of Nurvous, Purp & Soul, Baker Street Recordings, Sleazy Deep and Anjunadeep plus his acclaimed re-edits series have helped him to make a mark on the production side of things after a decade DJing in some of the world s most legendary clubs and festivals. The tail end of 2012 saw Annie Mac make his Jai Paul Re-Edit her Foundcloud Track Of The Week on BBC Radio 1, while the Guardian Music blog chose his Dan Croll remix as their track of the month for the Music Alliance Pact. Remixes for X-Press 2, Kris Menace & Chelonis R. Jones & Chapel Club are also in the bag, with an EP for UNER s Paulatine Records, two releases on New York's Stranjjur and a track on Asadinho's RvS imprint on the way in Autumn 2013. His first vinyl release for SHH! Edits sold out its first run and is on to its 2nd with a follow-up release in stores too. Baltic Fleet is the moniker of multi-instrumentalist and DIY producer Paul Fleming who returned in 2012 with his second album 'Towers' the follow-up to the critically acclaimed self-titled debut which was a Rough Trade Shops Record of the Year. In April 2013 Baltic Fleet was awarded the Liverpool Get Into This Award, dubbed the 'Scouse Mercury Prize' by The Quietus & voted for by NME, Quietus, Q & 6 music. OMD were doing this mixing of speech and music in their 90s phase. PSB follow this with a slightly different mix of speech and some super music.

Since Night Mail is one of my favorite songs from Inform Educate Entertain it was an easy decision for me to buy this remix EP. The musical rhythms echo the sounds of a train providing a mechanical propulsion and ebb and flow to the music. I enjoyed the variations on the same theme by the other artists. Several of the strongest parts of Night Mail are based on W.H. Auden's Night Mail poem which was written to accompany the 1936 GPO documentary of the same title. If you become as taken with this as I have become you can find the full version of the Night Mail documentary on youtube and hear for yourself which parts were sampled by Public Service Broadcasting. To determine whether this is something you will like you should watch and listen to the PSB youtube video for Night Mail.
