I came across this song as a recommendation on a Facebook group. I hadn't heard it for years and years; but I did remember it from the first time round. In my youth, I had bought the old 45 version of Baker Street (probably Gerry Rafferty's best known hit), but now I actually like "Night Owl" better.

In these days of auto tuning and manufactured music, it's wonderful to hear someone who can sing and play. The song sounds quite upbeat but is actually quite sad, being the thoughts of someone seeking forgetfulness by going out and drinking. Very melancholic, very deeply felt by the singer, I think. I wasn't a great fan of Gerry's in my younger days, but this has inspired me to seek out more of his work. Maybe I was too young before, but this is grown up music.

Another of Gerry Rafferty's long list of Iconic tracks, and one of his best, it is such a shame he is no longer with us to give us more of his talent.
