Product Description

Product Description

Five episodes of the CBeebies pre-school series narrated by Derek Jacobi, which takes children on an imaginative journey through the night garden, encountering its funny and lovable residents including Upsy Daisy, Igglepiggle, Makka Pakka, the Tombliboos, the Pontipines and the Haahoos.

From Amazon.co.uk

Chances are there's barely a parent of a toddler in the country who hasn't encountered In The Night Garden in some form over the past few months. The latest BBC-hit from the CBeebies channel, and with a passing resemblance to Teletubbies, this debut DVD for the show brings together five episodes. And many parents already, we suspect, will have their credit cards ready.

In true childrens' television tradition, In The Night Garden is often as alien to adults as it is compelling to its real target audience. But heck, do children love it. Accompanied by the gentle narration of Sir Derek Jacobi, it's billed a nursery rhyme picture book of sorts. This manifests itself in the shape of a wild mix of children and characters, who get up to a mixture of diverse and diverting activities.

And this is one of the many areas where In The Night Garden strikes gold. Not only does it have a distinctive and warm collection of characters, but it does have an educational undercurrent to it all. In short, it engages its target audience particularly well, and teaches them a little in the process.

The DVD is rounded off with special bonus footage and a parents' guide, but it's the five episodes that are set to be spun time and time again. And rightly so. Expect this to be the first DVD release of many, too, for a show with many, many years ahead of it. --Jon Foster --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This is one of the most beautiful and original childrens' television series I have seen for a long time. With delightful characters, lovely songs, magical sets (from the very beginning when the stars burst into flower onwards), imaginative words and word-play, they have conjured up an enchanting world which pre-school children just seem to love - and not just pre-schoolers, I have to say, but also Reception and Year 1 kids - and even their Grannys too, if our house is anything to go by.

Derek Jacobi's gentle narration is a pleasure to listen to, always striking the perfect note.

I really cannot recommend this highly enough.

My 18 month old son adores this programme. It's the only programme where he'll be silent the whole way through it (until the end when he starts singing and dancing along!). The BBC have really struck gold I think with this. Highly recommended.

Absolutely beautiful programme. Not sure whether I should be worrying more about my daughters eyesight as she stands an inch away from the screen so as not to miss anthing or the relationship between Iggle Piggle and Upsy Daisy.... (all that kissing, getting into Upsy Daisys bed and private rooms in the Pinky Ponk......!!!)

Took the dvd on holiday with us and we watched an episode each evening before bath as we do at home - worked a treat and she (generally!) went down without a problem.

Only hitch now, is she has figured out it is bath and bed after Night Garden so once the carousel comes on she immediately become very absorbed in "playing" with just half an eye on the programme so as not to miss anything but also to look very busy!!

Anyway, every under 3 should have this dvd - In the Night Garden on tap!!!

Ignore the last "review", if you have a pre-school child this program is magical.
My two year old screams with delight from the moment the introduction appears. It is filled with colours, sounds and simple situations which he can understand. We sit together as a family and sing a long to the simple tunes and rhymes, there is nothing more educational for his age group than that!!
If you try to read too much into it you are totally missing the point.

i think all the in the night garden storys are wonderful. i have three young children and along with my husband we watch as a family. i find their way of kissing and hugging a good way to show young children love and friendship without corrupting their minds. i would much rather see those weird characters hugging and kissing than most thing we see on childrens tv.
some people may find the repeating phrases annoying but it teaches children different sounds very much like the teletubbies did. my two year old son is disabled and has difficulty communicating but since he started to watch it he has been making more sounds and enjoys having them repeated back to him.
also the calming voice of derek jacobi makes it a little bit grown up as he is a great actor and adults can relate to him. my husband noticed it before the kids.
you get used to the names and songs the more you watch. the voices and repetative phrases become conversational to young kids. it sets their imaginations wild and they have more fun with it. i am sure that any young child who watches it will grow up to be talented in some why. painting, writing, things you have to have an imagination for.

thank you for reading my review, i hope you found it useful

This programme at first drove me bonkers, but now allows me a whole 25 minutes of my 14 months son sitting in one place completely entranced rather than trashing the house and chasing the cats! He loves the tunes and bounces along to Upsy Daisy Here I Come, I'm The Only Upsy One, but his most favourite part has to be the weird birds called the Titifers when they all get together close to the end and he tries to sing along. He has gone passed Teletubbies now and In The Night Garden is the only thing that will do!

I'll admit the first time I saw In the night garden I had my reservations, initial impressions were that my sister was feeding my nephew some Teletubby inspired brain rotting drivel. As I continued to watch with one brow raised I could clearly see that my first judgement was as hasty as it was wrong.

In the night garden plays an important part in my 18 month old nephews established routine and he knows that when the show is over its time for bed. At the end of a hard days exploring or mischievous shenanigans he snuggles up with mummy and is content to watch in comfort and on less exuberant days any of my nephews remaining energy is quickly burnt off singing and dancing along leaving him well and truly ready for bed.

I purchased a few of the In the night garden DVDs for my sister to put on her tablet to take on holiday so that my nephews routine was not disrupted, which I am told worked a treat despite a slight time difference. As other reviews rightly pointed out for those without a catch-up TV service a couple of these DVDs are essential if you rely on them as a routine and miss the day's episode on CBBC.

It's just a shame seasonal box sets aren't available as it would not just be more economical but also space saving for those wanting the complete collection.

This DVD has a runtime of 141 minutes and includes the following episodes
Season 1 Episode 1 - Makka Pakka Washes Faces (First aired 19/03/07).
Season 1 Episode 2 - The Tombliboos' Waving Game (First aired 20/03/07).
Season 1 Episode 3 - Everybody All Aboard the Ninky Nonk (First aired 21/03/07).
Season 1 Episode 4 - The Prettiest Flower (First aired 22/03/07).
Season 1 Episode 5 - Makka Pakka's Trumpet Makes a Funny Noise (First aired 23/03/07).

DVD packaging can change over time and the packaging shown in my pictures was purchased direct from Amazon November 2005 and the disc is R2.
