Vhs Or Beta ~ Night On Fire

Following up 2002's EP Le Funk comes this charming full length LP from Kentucky based VHS or Beta. Night On Fire takes its cue from mixing the near-synthetic rock/dance template (think Duran Duran with a bit more punch, or latterly Dogs Die in Hot Cars) with plaintively simple but effective vocals, and succeeds in creating a sound akin to a rock version of Daft Punk's retro stylings.

Setting out the stalls early with the instantly catchy title track, the album builds on the initial sounds (clipped funk guitars, elastic bass, vocals eerily reminiscent of Robert Smith) and crafts them into songs that are part-dance, part-rock. Despite the limited sonic palette, the album still manages to offer up numerous strong tracks, especially in its' second half.

Interspersed with two instrumentals "Night Waves" and "Forever" (well, it only has a four word lyric) which serve as a breather from Craig Pfunder's occasionally grating vocal style, the album is well paced, with the lengthy meditative exploration of "Irreversible" saved until last. Slowly building up into a mass of guitar noise, before settling back down into a hypnotic groove, this song is a definite highlight, though the entire album definitely demands a listen. --Thom Allott

This CD is great. I especially like Alive and Forever..but the whole CD is good. The great thing about this music is that it really is for everyone. .. not for a certain age group, but rather for a certain mindset, meaning, if you want to hear some upbeat music that sounds VERY this CD.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite electroclash albums - this is VERY catchy (and mostly interesting lyrically) - you'll like it! 5 Jan. 2006

VHS Or Beta is probably my favorite album in the electroclash genre (not that that's saying much - there aren't many good albums in this genre yet - Cut Copy's "Bright Like Neon Love" is also very good although I'm not 100% sure if it's considered electroclash). Every song is catchy and interesting, and the singer is pretty good for the band's style (he's Asian but sure doesn't sound like it!). If there's any song you've heard off this album it's probably "Night On Fire" as it has a music video and is an underground hit (it was on a "Urban Outfitters" mix CD!). Musically the songs are distinctly 80's and electroclash. The only "bad" track here is the last one, "Irreversible". It also loses its catchy momentum during the last half, but they're still all good. I wouldn't call this a classic (for its lack of a "wow" factor and the singer - he's not all that great and likable), but you'll still probably enjoy it. If you like 80's rock or electroclash, though, you will most definitely enjoy this album! Recommended!

Highlights include:
everything except for "Irreversible"

3.0 out of 5 stars Some great songs... 23 Aug. 2006
By J Aidan Gray - Published on

If you love their single, "Night on Fire", you'll probably like a few other songs on the album as well. The album is very upbeat, almost in a bubble gum kind of way. It's a bit sweep for me. But if you like dance rhythms and energetic music, this could be right for you. I just don't find myself reaching for it very often. I probably should have bought the single and stuck with that.
5.0 out of 5 stars The Album Rocks. 13 April 2005

Sure it is throw back to the alterna-eighties, but that is a good thing. A cross b/w early Cure, Simple Minds (life in a day), Echo and the Bunnymen, and throw in a few Duran Duran hooks. IF you like any of the aforementioned names, buy this album. You will get the sound of the eighties, only better recording. Man this album is refreshing -- like a nice cold beer after mowing the lawn.

I collect CDs, not downloads. There was no cover art and the cd is scratched and skips, too boot. Not pleased.

5.0 out of 5 stars VHS or Beta= good 5 Jun. 2005

I really like this CD- there are a couple of instrumental tracks, but even those are good. Tracks 1,2,4,7& 9 are killer! This CD is highly recommended. It has an 80s vibe to it, but an also an alternative music vibe...this has not left my CD player since I discovered it a year ago.
