From the outset, I was "on the edge of my chair", with this amazing and gripping film. I wasn't prepared for the gripping story of espionage, detection and courage that this film portrayed. By today's standards, of course, it is dated. However, the cast, as one would expect, is superb and the settings are very believable. I would highly recommend this film to anyone who wants suspense and surprise almost all through the film. It isn't one of those "and they all lived happily ever after" type of films, though; in real life people are caught and die. So it is with this film. A must see!

Didn't know what to expect with this; I must say I was very pleasantly surprised. Complex, but easy to follow espionage plot. The boat scenes reminded me of my travels to/from Dublin as a child - happy days. The film, cast and story line were all easy on the eye and on the old grey matter. Just the kind of film I'd recommend for a Winter's evening. Congratulations to Studio Canal for releasing it.

An exciting and entertaining war-time espionage thriller with the wonderful Robert Newton that for me falls somewhere between the excessive praise heaped upon it and the misanthropic soul who wished to consign it to the Irish Sea.

Lawrence Huntingdon is very much second division, with Newton on auto-pilot, when you consider the performances he delivered for good directors in ‘Odd Man Out’ and ‘Obsession’, not to mention his celebrated period roles.

It made a pleasant change to see spies on a boat rather than the recent spate of thrillers set on trains but it lacked any real maritime atmosphere with only a toy in a bathtub shot and gangplank and deck sets to rely on and a ship interior that looked like a left-over hotel restaurant set.

I spent half the film wondering who the greedy steward was (“The face looks familiar”) until I realized that it was, of course the great character actor Leslie Dwyer, best known as the child-hating Punch and Judy Man from ‘Hi-De-Hi’.

There is a good compliment of villains but I wish Herbert Lom had been given a more prominent role.

Carroll Gibbons makes a welcome but all too-brief appearance, only tinkling the ivories, when I wished he had launched into ‘A Foggy Day’.

There was a rather nice symmetry with the beginning and ending taking place in two ancient towers.

Good solid entertainment. 3 ½ stars.

I just like Robert Newton spy films. I don't know why! This is great fun and I recomend it to anyone who a) likes Newton b) likes British b/w films of the 40's c) likes Spy films. I will watch this again in 18 months or so, always a good test. My wife won't. Ah well. Go for it

My goodness, how have I managed to avoid seeing this film in half a century of being a fan of British films from the forties and fifties? It's wonderful to see a younger and more restrained Robert Newton, a truly sinister Raymond Lovell, a brief appearance by Herbert Lom, and an excellent Guy Middleton - why wasn't he given more serious roles instead of the usual comedy performances? This film has suspense, an excellent array of actors, and a lovely atmosphere - there is something wonderfully comforting about the sets. I am so glad I took a chance and ordered this, thanks to the other positive reviews on this page. If you like British films, suspense films, or just very good films of any description, buy this as I am certain you will not regret it - far from it!
