This is a great album - though it's uncool to say so.
Back in the day (1982) Jazz-Funk was all around, but it ended up being binned as 'musak' and appears to have been scrubbed out of the musical history of the time.
This album has 3 fabulous singles and lots of very good tracks. It has been scrubbed up by Dutton Vocalion and sounds great.
It's good-time music that needs to be taken for what it is - we all need cheering up sometimes. After the passing of over 30 years(?!) it deserves to come back out of the shadows.

Got this album when it first came out on vinyl, and liked it a lot then. Got sort of forgotten when I packed up my record player about 10 years ago. Hearing it again, this really is an excellent album. The genre is often said to be jazz / funk, but it's really more like jazz / pop. After 30 odd years it's stood the test of time well, better than many of the more successful groups from that era. Good songs, good musicianship and good production shows through.

I bought my first ' SHAKATAK ' in 1994 and was hooked on them for a while, but like most things my music tastes changed and I went off them. Recently I decided to give them ago again so I ordered Night Birds and it bought back old memories, this is superb album and well worth a listen as there are extended tracks on the album which add to the listening.

Just been reminded of Shakatak on the Paul O'Grady show on Radio2. I bought the first 2 CD's on Vinyl and went to see them in concert twice, unfortunately the second time round we had seats in mid stalls but due to poor attendance we were brought forward to make it look like there was a full house from the stage area. I remember Bill Sharp once worked for the BBC and Gavin Wright was MD for Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, will be buying this CD as it was my first purchase on vinyl.

Love it way back in the days of vinyl and so pleased when I saw it in MP3. Happy, mellow days.

I bought this in 1982 as a vinyl LP when it was first released. I really liked it then, and now that this CD of the original album has come out, it is just as good and enjoyable as I remembered it !

Shakatak do seem to get a bad press for their "select" sound and this albums problem to me is that if you compare it to Drivin' Hard which was instrumental with occasional female backing vocals, this album had a shift in roles, making the female vocalist lead meaning mainly singing as opposed to the earlier funk driven sounds and distinctive keyboards.

My personal opinion of the above reviewers thoughts is that he/she bought the CD on a whim and hated it and now spreads the hate to every person who reads it. Not fair really. Obviously hasn't heard of constructive criticism!

The album was the start of Shakatak's more poppie direction but still has some good hits like "Nightbirds" and "easier said than done" even if the lead funky sound was lost somewhere it's disco/funk/pop grooves still appeal and offers an alternative to the popular (yes they were popular) Drivin' Hard.

Not to discredit this album but if you want towards the best of Shakatak get Drivin' Hard and consider this one for the few good hits on there.
