What a great volume. No, it won't hold your hand... I can see people being baffled by this!
Basically, it's an ideas generator. Pick it up, and play - honestly, play the tabs, and ideas will arise, far more than scales

(Music Sales America). This book is a condensed, made-for-guitar version of Nicolas Slonimsky's publication Thesaurus of Scales and Melodic Patterns the book that musicians as diverse as John Coltrane and Frank Zappa used for ideas and inspiration. Musicians familiar with the original Thesaurus know that it contains a daunting amount of information crammed in its over 230 pages. But there is a definite symmetry and logic in these Slonimsky examples. What appear to be random patterns are actually mathematical combinations of some or all of the twelve notes in music. As the musician/student plays through the examples, the patterns will unfold and become more obvious.

I like the way it's made intelligible for guitarists, both with musical notation and tablature. Stuff in there probably last you a lifetime!

Highly recommended to all guitarists looking for some new (and different) stimulation.

I just received this book today. A quick skim through it was enough to let me know that there is a lot of valuable material in here.
I was playing through some of the patterns selected at random, I especially like the pentatonic scale section, however I wish more examples were included as I have heard some of the other pentatonic scales from the original book and they're pretty interesting.
I believe this book will open up my guitar playing, improve my composing, and really develop my ear.
Once I've tackled this one I may as well get the original text and discover even more brilliant patterns.
(Some of these patterns/exercises/melodies are great finger-busters and cover the whole range of the guitar in some cases!)
