A beautiful tribute

Such a shame that Shannon died when and how he did.

A band with much to give - and the familiar story of drug addiction taking a true talent too early.

This CD is a great way to unwind at the end of the day when life's stresses have done their best to grind the mood down. Shannon's voice has an uncanny way of lifting the spirits.

Raw, emotional music

Although from a technical and production viewpoint this album is far from Blind Melon's best, for me it is by far their most heartfelt album. I have recommended it to many people above Blind Melon or Soup, simply because it manages to communicate the raw power and emotion of music, without the need for polished production or mass advertising. The song Soup is my personal favourite because I feel it encompasses all of the above qualities. A definite must for any true music-lover.

A classic. An Amazing Band's Finest Hour

I cannot believe someone has given Nico only 3 stars below Blind Melon's other 2 albums! While I was first hooked by the incredible ethereal nature of 'No Rain' and the upbeat rockyness of the self-titled 'Blind Melon' album, making me a huge fan of the band, it was in Nico that

I found that these guys were not destined to be a one-hit-wonder. As a rock chick with great appreciation for heavier riffs and the whole RHCP's riffs of Blind Melon's earlier work, in Nico it is the ethereal and poignant and raw and completely original nature of the incredibly beautiful songs that made me absolutely desolate that this band will be no more. I really recommend this record to anyone, it goes from the happy-go-lucky vibes of 'the pusher' and 'hell' to a synister, haunting note in 'glitch', to a so poignantly upbeat and optimistic 'life ain't so shitty', to a good rock'n'roll tune like 'swallowed'. To me this album exemplifies this band's true talent: it shows that their songwriting was capable of a greater scope than their plucky, albeit immature and repetitive first two albums. Listening to this album made me really grieve that we have lost this incredible assortment of musicians for evermore. A real classic

Sad brillance

What can you say. If you know Blind Melon the band, then you will love Blind Melon the band. Shannon Hoon was the enigmatic, charasmatic leader of the band who fell off the poolside one day and never got up again. His death, and the legacy of untapped talent he left behind is what makes this album so special to fans of his music.
This collection of unreleased material contains some real gems including a song recorded on the telephone answering machine.
Shannon voice will take you to many places and certainly bring a lump to the throat knowing he has passed on.
Buy this and listen to a liver of life who gave his all in pursuit of his own happiness.

Not their best album, But...

This band rose to the top and looked over the edge but onejumped off. Shannon Hoon was found dead in their tour bus due to an overdose. He had just become a father to Nico Blue Hoon. This album was put together after his death and serves as a tribute to him and there work. The songs are b-sides outtakes and are rare gritty. This is not Blind Melon at there best in fact quite the opposite as they do have some great songs. Some of the songs like 'The Pusher, Soul One and Life Ain't So...' stand out but do not excel this band to what they are all about. The rare track is 'No Rain' (ripped away version), we will truly miss out on what was set to be a interesting band that would have had a bright future.

a great tribute to the heart of blind melon

Loving the other albums as i do, this one seems to most accurately sum up the raw talent of Shannon Hoon. It's not as polished (of course) but any fan of Blind Melon must adore Hoon's voice and this gives you the simple beauty and strength of it with fewer trappings to distract the listener, Hell, life ain't so shitty and letters from a porcupine etc give you a glimpse of how his mind worked, they're all wonderful songs however and the enhanced disc is full of gems
