Read the blurb and I was pulled in to the story. Starting reading and realized even though the book is good it was a book I could put down. I didn't find myself trying to devour the book within a day and for me that isn't good. If I truly love a book I have to finish it to find out what is going to happen next. With For Nicky I did enjoy how we the readers got different P.O.V.'s from all the main characters in the book. We get to learn about each character Nicky, Nate, Elizabeth and even Audrey. With learning about each character we also see things through their eyes and their feelings when confronted with different scenes.
I think what really bothered me was there was so many descriptions within the book, I felt a lot words were repeated, and some of the scenes didn't feel "real" for me.
I know that for some authors writing a character into a book that has a disability is hard you need to get it just right so your readers can get a feel of the character. With Nicky I felt the author did a good job.
Nate and Elizabeth, this story is mostly about two people trying to come together and help each other overcome which eventually happens. They both struggle with different things within their lives. Nate fights people when they are rude and mean to his brother Nicky who is disabled. Elizabeth believes herself to be unworthy of anyone or anything because her sister Audrey has broken her spirit. Quite sad really. But we learn that overtime and with help they can overcome their hardships.
The ending is what I ended up expecting and though it was okay nothing spectacular.
What bothered me with the book.
Descriptions, I learned what the inside of the basement looked like and how it was decorated I think that possibly this could have been left out. Sometimes less description is good in a story. But that is just me.
Repetitiveness, I learned a more than one occasion that Nate has a shoe fetish. Umm okay I got this the first and second time this was mentioned. He loves shoes gotcha. And the repeating of For Nicky. It seemed towards the middle to the end of the book I learned at the end of every chapter it was all done "For Nicky."
Scenes. There is one part that deals with rape. The way the outcome was handled it just didn't seem believable. The person that committed this crime and that is what it is, didn't get punished. Even though this person and all those involved got help I think that person should have at least been punished. It was like it was swept under a rug.
I know that Audrey's story is coming out, and I think I will give that a read. I want to know what made her treat her sister like that. Maybe her past will come to light within her own story being told.
Not all of it is lovely what happens between these pages though, abuse, drugs, bullying, put that together and you have a very bumpy ride with relationships with family+friends.
There are some good morales in this story we could all learn from in life.
If I were younger too, I'd have learnt some good lessons from this book to stop and think about.
I liked this book, I think you will too.
