Nicholas Timmins is a journalist turned chronicler, having been public policy editor at The Financial Times until 2012. Before that worked for Nature, the Press Association, The Times and The Independent.
His "Five Giants: A Biography of the Welfare State" first appeared in 1995 when it won the Longman/History Today and the Yorkshire Post book prizes. It has seen been fully updated and massively extended, taking the story up to early 2017 - just ahead of the 75th anniversary of the Beveridge report and, next year, the 70th of the NHS and much else.
