The book is a sequential catalogue of what happened but, confusingly, without enough dates to be sure of what is going on. More importantly, the whys and wherefores are hardly examined at all - just vague, glib and unexplained statements that "the Masters" directed it all. I get the impression that the author is attributing her own beliefs to the Roerichs and assuming everyone else shares them. She seems breathlessly gushing at how marvellous the Roerichs' work was, listing the names of other people involved (often without explaining who they were), but has very little insight into the Roerichs' own motives and inspiration - and certainly does not give a satisfyingly adequate account of their spritual life. Jacqueline Decter's book on Roerich's art is much more informative.

through the Far East, it was very hard during the early 1920's to travel the silk road. I did not know
the contribution they made to art and culture until this book. A marvelous read.
