"...It's all right Lady Eleanor..." Well on the evidence presented here - indeed it is. Newcastle's Lindisfarne made a wonderful Folk-Rock sound - similar in many ways to Matthews Southern Comfort, Brinsley Schwarz, Fotheringay and even at times John Martyn.

Re-listening to their November 1970 debut album "Nicely Out Of Tune" in November 2016 (46 years after the event) and you're struck by the accomplished songwriting - the warmth of the melodies - and especially the lovely audio on this 2004 CD Remaster (done at Abbey Road). In fact I'm thinking it's a bit of a lost and forgotten classic. And I love the way this Virgin/Charisma CD reissue has used the 'Pink Scroll Label' variant of 'The Famous Charisma Label' on the CD aping the appearance of the rare November 1970 original British LP (Charisma CAS 1025). Here are the Roads To Kingdom Come...

UK released May 2004 - "Nicely Out Of Tune" by LINDISFARNE on EMI/Virgin/Charisma CASCDR 1025 (Barcode 724357990226) is an 'Expanded Edition' CD Remaster with Two Bonus Tracks and plays out as follows (52:53 minutes):

1. Lady Eleanor
2. Road To Kingdom Come
3. Winter Song
4. Turn A Deaf Ear
5. Clear White Light (Part 2)
6. We Can Swing Together [Side 2]
7. Alan In The River With Flowers
8. Down
9. The Things I Should Have Said
10. Jackhammer Blues
11. Scarecrow Song
Tracks 1 to 11 are their debut studio album "Nicely Out of Tune" - released November 1970 in the UK on Charisma Records CAS 1025 (Pink Scroll Label variant) - Produced by JOHN ANTHONY. It was reissued January 1972 on the Charisma 'Mad Hatter' Label variant with the same catalogue number - this version rose to No. 8 on the UK LP charts.

I loved this album when I had it on vinyl and later on cassette and was very upset when they both failed. Now I've got it on CD and it's lost nothing over the years. It's another album that for me evokes memories of happier days and great nights at the local discos.

This is a true classic and in many people's opinion(and mine) the best they did, I think "Dingly Dell" &" Fog on the Tyne" come close they have great songs, this is a great album, a definate case of getting it dead right the first time. It's got the lot, lively and ireverent with the likes of "we can swing together" to the melodic thoughtful "Alan in the river with flowers", and perhaps in "Winter Song" one of the best songs the late and much lamented Alan Hull ever wrote. This is truly a great song, listen to the words and think how something written over 40 years ago is still so meaningfull today. All this and a smattering of classics from Rod Clements as well.

It's very very good, unusually you even get bonus tracks on the CD version that are worth having rather than put there to fill up the space.

Try it you might just like it

HEXHAM NORTHUMBERLAND SOME TIME IN THE 1990S, ROOTING THROUGH THE OXFAM 50P RECORD BOX FOUND THIS ON A CHARITY SHOP LUCKY DIP BASIS, AND FOR ME THE GOOD LORD PROVIDED MY ALBUM. I ONLY NEW LADY ELEANOR, AND THAT WAS LOVED IN SECRET FOR MY RECORD BUYING ERA IS POST 77,AND ALL THE ANGRY PEOPLE WOULD NEVER LISTEN TO THAT!(OH WHAT A GREAT LEGACY THEY LEFT).EACH TRACK IS SPECIAL (3)= GOOSEBUMP FACTOR 50! 1. ALAN IN THE RIVER WITH FLOWERS 2.THE THINGS I SHOULD OF SAID 3.NOTHING BUT THE MARVELLOUS IS BEAUTIFUL (ONE OF 2 BONUS TRACKS, I HAVE NOT ENJOYED BEFORE ITS AMAZING).THE OTHER KNACKERS YARD BLUES (BY ROD CLEMENTS) IS VERY LIKE LENNON OF THE PERIOD, AND THE LEGEND ALAN HULL SEEMED TO SWIM IN HIS WATER ON A FEW OF HIS SOLO SONGS.I UNDERSTAND SOME OTHER REVIEWS ARE A BIT DOWN ON NICELY OUT OF TUNE, AND MY PASSION FOR IT LIKE MANY THINGS IS A BIT SKEWED, BUT FOR ME NO OTHER ALBUM DOES WHAT THIS DOES TO ME! PLEASE GIVE IT A GO THROUGH AMAZON UK.

First released in 1970 and now remastered "Nicely out of Tune" is still the strongest release from the fab five. Classics such as Lady Eleanor, Clear White Light, We can swing Together and Winter Song (described by Elvis Costello as the greatest song ever written) are scattered throughout the album the remaining track are by no means fillers as a number of the other tracks could have just as easily been released as singles at the time. There is not a weak track on the album, the harmonies are wonderful and the acoustic guitar haunting on such tracks as Winter song and Lady Eleanor. Knacker Yard Blues and Nothing but the marvellous also appear (they were originally the b-sides of Clear White Light and Lady Eleanor respectively and didn't appear on the album on its original release) as an added bonus to complete a wonderful trip back in time. The only fault is with 'Down' which originally had a lovely crackly scratchy intro which someone in their wisdom has cleaned up and take away the charm from that track but I think we can forgive the engineer that one. Although almost 35 years old Nicely out of Tune still sounds fresh and original and is a must for any fan of good music and a great way to discover Lindisfarne again.
