Now, Mrs Pargeter is an interesting character, there are decent suspects with decent motives and Brett is a good writer. For some reason though, I found myself distinctly underwhelmed by this, the first in the Mrs Pargeter series. It all coasts along smoothly, perhaps too smoothly. It feels as though perhaps, Brett is unsure what he's going to do with the series. I also found the ending rather glib in light of the events that Mrs Pargeter uncovers.
So, not a great start to the series, but based on Brett's other novels I've read, I'll read the next one.
