This is an attractive, well-produced, medium-sized paperback; but it might not be quite what you were expecting.

What it definitely is not, is a book full of varied and inspiring examples of modern calligraphy.

What it is, is a basic primer on Chiara's rather lovely - but rather limited, it would seem - interpretation of 'modern calligraphy'. The style you see on the example pages visible here (and in other online images), with very subtle variations, is all there is here; that's it. A bit of a 'one trick pony' really.

There is also a useful introduction to the basics of the craft, similar to most calligraphy primers but all done in a friendly and approachable style.

Fully one third of the book is taken up with appropriately ruled, but otherwise blank, pages for you to emulate, practice or extemporize on the examples shown. However, since this is a fairly thick 'perfect bound' paperback it simply will not lie flat for you write on; to make proper use of the practice sheets you would need, at the very least to break the binding, or ideally remove the pages altogether (or your hand will often be resting on the thick edge of the book). I think that alone betrays the books very basic aspirations.

With a further twenty-odd pages devoted to prelims, half-titles or essentially blank pages, you'll see there isn't actually a lot here.

If you're looking for an 'entre' into some fun with a pen, for gifts, social stationery or whatever, without concerning yourself with the technicalities and rigour of more formal calligraphy, this could be good for newcomers. But if you're fairly inventive, or a quick learner you might outgrow this book before you've finished it. If you simply don't get along with the very particular lettering style used herein, you might find it doesn't lead you anywhere at all.

A handsome book; not really what I was expecting, but if it encourages others to 'give it a go' that's great.

I have to admit that I almost sent this book back after I received it. Although, this book is very pretty to look at, it is very light on content and it feels like it has been produced in a hurry. I had expected to find several different script examples, but a lot of the book is taken up by blank practice pages. What's worse is that these practice pages are completely useless because of the size and binding type of the book. Surely the author would have known this as an experienced calligrapher? Why not just include a link in the book to downloadable practice pages? All in all, this book is a bit too much style over intent for me.

Probably the worst calligraphy book I bought in years. About 80 % of the book are empty pages where you are supposed to practice. Which is stupid as nobody would do this in a book for several reasons. The rest of the book are mostly useless examples. All of which, examples and practice sheets can be found online for free very easily and in better quality.

The author describes ONE single type of lettering and calls it "the modern calligraphy alphabet" as if there was such a thing. The author constantly refers to it as if it was a set and agreed upon alphabet. This is not misleading, it is outright wrong.

Many of the absolute essentials are not covered in the book. There is nothing about kerning, embellishments, different styles. Many of the basic rules are constantly broken which is annoying for a beginner. Especially as they are not explained why they are ignored. Maybe that is why they are not even mentioned. There is also literally nothing in the book about different sizes and heights. You can only write in one size. As soon as you go larger (i.e. for a bigger card) you will notice that you are lost.

The whole book focuses on one type of nib…but there are hundreds out there. Again it mentions only one other type of nib in the passing and giving the impression that that is the way it is.

The calligraphy of the author in this book shows no originality and has a very unprofessional feel to it. The worst thing is lack of consistency in her writing.

If you already know how to write this book is a waste of money. There is basically no content worth your time and money. If you are new to calligraphy then stay away from this book as well. You will not learn the basic rules neither will you be able to use different nibs. You will be unable to create your own style.

I would give 0 stars if that was possible.

Not a book I could recommend, except to a complete beginner. Far too much preamble, and hardly any examples of different styles. A third of the book is simply blank paper for practising, but it is impossible to do calligraphy in a stitch bound book. I am not an expert calligrapher, but I was looking for something to transition me away from formal strict "copperplate" styles to a more modern freer style. This book fails in this respect. Too expensive, too limited in technique, inappropriately bound as a practice book and not to be recommended - I'd like my money back!

Such a lovely book I've just been practicing with pencil so far I need to get kitted out to practice with ink! I think it'll be a lovely way to spend the dark evenings coming up! Not scary at all & you can just start with a pencil.
