However, I found some gaps in the instructions (perhaps these could be rectified for subsequent editions). It doesn't tell you how to attach the nib to the holder and doesn't suggest you keep your nib pointed to the top left of the page, which I was taught in traditional calligraphy classes many moons ago. Without the latter I'm not sure it would work. Layout paper is recommended and they offer a printable guide (love this!) but it's really too thin - I needed a heavier weight cartridge paper to prevent bleed through. More guidance on how much is too much ink on the nib.
Overall a lovely book, beautifully put together and the tips are great - I still have to consciously remind myself to be light on the up strokes and slightly firmer on the down strokes but that will come. Might be a bit fiddly initially if you've not learnt cursive.
Price makes an esential purchase if you want some good reference material for learning/starting out at calligraphy.
What it definitely is not, is a book full of varied and inspiring examples of modern calligraphy.
What it is, is a basic primer on Chiara's rather lovely - but rather limited, it would seem - interpretation of 'modern calligraphy'. The style you see on the example pages visible here (and in other online images), with very subtle variations, is all there is here; that's it. A bit of a 'one trick pony' really.
There is also a useful introduction to the basics of the craft, similar to most calligraphy primers but all done in a friendly and approachable style.
Fully one third of the book is taken up with appropriately ruled, but otherwise blank, pages for you to emulate, practice or extemporize on the examples shown. However, since this is a fairly thick 'perfect bound' paperback it simply will not lie flat for you write on; to make proper use of the practice sheets you would need, at the very least to break the binding, or ideally remove the pages altogether (or your hand will often be resting on the thick edge of the book). I think that alone betrays the books very basic aspirations.
With a further twenty-odd pages devoted to prelims, half-titles or essentially blank pages, you'll see there isn't actually a lot here.
If you're looking for an 'entre' into some fun with a pen, for gifts, social stationery or whatever, without concerning yourself with the technicalities and rigour of more formal calligraphy, this could be good for newcomers. But if you're fairly inventive, or a quick learner you might outgrow this book before you've finished it. If you simply don't get along with the very particular lettering style used herein, you might find it doesn't lead you anywhere at all.
A handsome book; not really what I was expecting, but if it encourages others to 'give it a go' that's great.
