If you are looking to use a Celestron Nexstar computer guided GOTO telescope and mount, then this book will take you through every stage of setup, operation and maintenance, in a very user-friendly and readable manner. For the novice astronomer, the first chapter provides a thorough 40-page introduction on basic observational astronomy. Additional elements include chapters on astronomical software, connecting a PC, photography and planning your observations. In short, very highly recommended.

Here's a case where I should have read the small print.

The vital bit here is "2nd printing 2005". This means that although it gives quite a lot of useful information, all the specifics are for previous ranges of Nexstars, so that your Nexstar SE's are not mentioned.

This doesn't mean it's not useful information and some of it will still apply, but it won't be quite as "on the target" as it would have been for the specific models that are referred to in the book.

The book contains lots of useful info and advice for NexStar users. You could find some of the info out yourself with a lot of hunting around and reading on the web. But having this in an easy to read book is much better.

Being a few years old now it does not include details of the latest Nexstar models etc, but the author does have a website (nexstarsite) where updates to the book are made available.

It is a very comprehensive book that is an ideal companion to to the telescope. The writer's enthusiasm comes through in the text. The first chapters give a lengthy introduction that seem to take a long time to reach the "meat" of the book but when you get there it is sound, practical advice.

This is essential reading for anyone with a Celestron telescope. It tells you vastly more about the telescopes and how to get the best out of them than Celestron's own manual. You can then go 'on-line' and get the latest updated information on your own particular telescope. It's a great work by Michael Swanson who has written it in such a helpful and comprehensive manner. It won't create clear skies for you but, when you have them, it makes their clarity even greater!

Hopelessly out of date, for the price I would have expected better. Poor graphics and the overall content bad and dated.

The reviews are very old, as is the book.

The Springer series books are all pricey and you have to be careful when you buy.

Overall they suffer from poor graphics and are dated. For the price they should be updated.

I found this book useful following the purchase of a NexStar 5SE, given that I was a complete beginner and I needed to source as much information as possible.

It was helpful but it tries to do too much and it is not always easy to find the specific piece of information which you need.
