This is another great book by Newman, I have the shorter version in paperback Newman's Birds of Southern Africawhich is with me in the field on all my birding trips in South Africa and in particular in the Phalaborwa area of South Africa.
This expanded version is a hardback and is used as my clean copy at home in South Africa. There is much more info in the expanded version with a total of 511 pages. The colour and black and white plates are beautifuly illustrated and bird types are easily found by using the small colour tabs to the bottom corners of the page-this enables quick identification whilst on the move, and with constant use you start to assocaite bird type with the colour code enabling you to open the book within a couple of pages of the species you are trying to identify.
There is of course a complete index of the English names and the Afrikaans names to assist you in finding any species where you might not be sure of its "type" that maybe you are asked about by a guest, friend or fellow birder. The illustrations (by Kenneth Newman himself) are as usual, stunning, anyone with passion enough to paint over 400 species of birds know his stuff! There is a section on recent rare vargrants and migrants, info on habitat types, bird topography and the book covers pretty much all of Southern Africa including South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Swaziland and Mozambique.
There is also an Afrikaans version of this book if you would prefer that version to the English.Read more ›
Fortunately the bool was only required for 9 days on a safari type holiday. It was not badly treated, did not get wet, was not dropped but was used quite heavily.
In comparison to my other field guides it is essentially unusable and I am considering requesting a refund once I have extracted the bird list from it.
