NEW ZEALAND GLASS (2ND EDITION) BY ANGELA M BOWEY

A READER'S REVIEW

New Zealand Glass is a delight and a treasure - a real "taonga o te motu katoa" (national treasure) in its own right. It is an absolute bijou of a compilation of original pictures and gorgeous photographs, together with a fascinating, flowing, but succinct, narrative which both enthralls the reader and illuminates this interesting subject in exactly the right amount of detail to suit both the hitherto uninitiated as well as the cognoscenti.
The photographs in this book of the work of the leading contemporary glass artists of New Zealand simply make the reader want to rush out and caress these magnificent masterpieces. Angela Bowey's commentary of the techniques involved in their manufacture, together with brief biographical notes about the artists themselves make this book as collectible as the glass artistry described within it.

Before reading this book I knew absolutely nothing about glass. Now, my enthusiasm to learn more has been kindled with a vengeance by Angela Bowey's expertise and clear style of writing. I strongly recommend this excellent book to lay people and to experts alike.

** Disclaimer - I received my copy of this book from the Author **
I found this book to be quite interesting, with a good mix of the history of glass in New Zealand, as well as specific details about the types of glass. This book would be a great guide for someone getting into collecting glass, as well as those who are trying to discern the provenance of pieces they already own.

The tone can be quite dry and technical, but that is, I think, more about the topic than the author.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in not just practical glassware (such as antique drinking glasses) but also those who collect pieces for their aesthetic qualities and want to know more about where their pieces have originated from.

An excellent historical review of the struggles for bottlers to remain open in New Zealand history
as well as profiles and examples of contemporary glass artists. Interesting for the casual reader and I expect important to glass artists and those interested in glass manufacturing.

Hello Angela..........I want to thank you for having a site like the Glass Message Board, it is very helpful in the glass ID world. I am an avid glass collector, paperweights- Blenko Glass - Murano- Czech- etc. I recently came across not 1 but 2 vintage "Veronese Vases" by Zecchin in a small antique store in the middle of no-where here in the USA. So it is a possibility that great glass threasures can be found by simply going out and looking........modartistraul
