This story is set in New York and features Amy, who was Sally’s cousin. Sally had an impulsive streak and booked her a ticket over to New York to take her mind off a traumatic breakup. While in the city, she takes on some work as a producer for a cat food ad. As cats are unpredictable creatures, the shoot overruns and Amy misses her flight back to the UK. Fearing she will be alone over Christmas, she has an unexpected knight in shining armour appear at the last second. We also get a bit about Amy’s back story and why she has ended up in New York at Christmas, and although the story is very short, it is well written and I feel I got to know a bit about the character.
While this short story was released as a prelude to the book, I feel that as I read it after the book, it made more sense. I felt as though I knew the character of Sally better, and understood why she did what she did in the short story. The timeline isn’t the same as the book, as in the book, Sally would have already be dead when she invited Amy to New York, but don’t let this distract you from what is a nice Christmas themed short story. There are also a few pages of the book at the back of this free Kindle download.
The story follows Amy throughout Christmas Eve as she stresses at work, trying to make sure everything is all wrapped but in time for her to get her flight back home, from buying last minute presents to tempting a pissed off cat to play nicely with some treats. Everything seems to be going against her in her bid to make it to JFK on time.
Amy's story is told in time segments, getting closer and closer to the end of the day. I thought this was quite a good way to break up the story as it is really short, and couldn't warrant chapters. You also get a glimpse of the reason Amy is in New York in the first place which is good as it gives her character a little bit of depth.
We are with her throughout the day and get a little bit of a stressed out feel from her, I think the time countdown adds to the overall story here as each time its edging closer and closer to the time she needs to catch her flight at.
This story isn't as festive as some of the stories I've read for my Christmas feature and it's super short so could probably be read in a spare Christmas Eve hour, but it does, as the blurb suggests, give the illusions that New York is a place where fairytales can happen.
Good writing but very linear.
The remainder of the book is an extract from the full length novel "The Last Time I Saw You"
Then, you get an extract from the authors latest work. Confusingly, all the characters seemed to have the same names in the new novel, so I ended up having to go back and check that this wasn't some kind of follow on, and that it was actually, a completely seperate story!
Writing was ok, but I think that we could have done with another 20 pages to finish the short story off in a slightly more pleasing way.
