I've spent a few years running and recently my knees started to give me trouble. I'm an active person at heart and wanted to find some way of exercising. This book has re-introduced me to my childhood love of ballet and has given my firmer thighs and buttocks in 6 months than running did in 3 years!!! And I wanted a body that was lithe and strong not bulky. Doing this workout has given me exactly that.
I'd recommend this to anyone. If you do the stretches and exercises, pushing yourself a little further each time you do them, you will work up a sweat. It can be as gentle or strenuous as you want it to be. The DVD is a great companion to the book, with a few extra stretches and moves.

For years, I have tried countless workouts that promise to help you achieve the body that you want, but every time I soon get despondent and give up, because they just do not deliver what they promise.
A couple of years ago I started doing yoga, which has given me great flexibility and suppleness, but still I was after something that would really TONE, and give me long sculpted muscles without bulk. So when I came across the New York City Ballet Workout I thought I would give it a try.
I have to say I am just so impressed with this book!! Firstly, the design and photographs are both beautiful and inspiring, and the layout and instructions make it so easy to use! But that is all second to the effects that it has on your body!!

I started to notice a change within the first two days of doing the workout particularly in my legs, and after only a week my legs appeared slimmer, more toned and leaner, I was getting muscle definition WITHOUT bulk, which is something that has always been a problem for me. I could definitely notice a difference in my stomach also (flatter and more toned) and my waistline (more sculpted and curved)! and this is without any changes to my diet whatsoever.
The amazing thing about this workout is that it is easy to understand exactly how to perform the exercises, it doesn't take ages to do, and you can really feel it working muscles that you had no idea were there! It feels really natural! Almost like this is the way that your body is SUPPOSED to be, and you are simply reawakening what is already there, naturally and gracefully.
I have become rather sceptical about 'miracle exercises' that promise a fantastic body but the New York City Ballet really seems to know its stuff.

My only experience of dance of any kind is modern dancing classes in Grade 1 and 2, so I was slightly hesitant about ordering this book. The worries were unnecessary, as the exercises contained in this book are suitable for everyone, even those with no experience of ballet whatsoever. I was actually quite impressed that the NYC ballet managed to compile so many exercises that ordinary people could do. There are typical ballet exercises, of course, like plies and tendus, and it takes a little time to keep your balance, but after a couple of weeks I found myself doing the whole routine without the aid of a wall or chair. The exercises themselves are not excessively difficult (if you can't raise you leg chest high, just raise it knee or waist high, you will still see a wonderful effect) and the book includes step by step illustrations which are fantastic. And there are LOADS of exercises, so you'll never be bored, and you can mix and match as much as you like, depending on how much time you have or how energetic you're feeling. You'll also find a wealth of really wonderful stretches that will benefit you no matter which sport discipline you are involved in. I didn't see much improvement in my upper body after using this book for a few weeks, but I did see a considerable difference in the shape of my legs and behind, I was so impressed that the "droopy effect" had disappeared after about a month of using this book regularly :)

Don't be discouraged if it takes really long to do all the exercises in the book the first few times - it took me over an hour to do a sequence of exercises which were suggested as a 30 minute workout!

I bought this book after trying the New York City Ballet Workout on DVD, which I love and do every other day either on its own or with another program. The photography in this book is inspirational and lovely. Yes they do take up a lot of space but so does the exercise programme so don't be put off. This book does not have exactly the same exercises as you'll find on the video and DVD but you'll find they compliment each other very well. Every stage is detailed in a way even an impatient person like me can grasp and understand :)
When I started doing the New York City Ballet Workout, I had a badly injured back and had a lot of balance/stability problems and chronic pain. Since I started, I have experienced a huge improvement [even my Chiropractor was surprised!] with my back and I *love* the effect this programme has on the rest of my body - especially my stomach and thighs. I feel graceful, taller, leaner and stronger thanks to Peter Martins and the NYC Ballet Co.
