Product Description

Product Description

Sony Classical is pleased to announce the release of the recording of one of the world’s most famous classical music events: the 2012 New Year’s Concert with the Vienna Philharmonic. Latvian conductor Mariss Jansons returns to direct the 2012 celebrations after his acclaimed debut in 2006. The live recording encompasses releases on CD, DVD and Blu-ray.
The annual New Year's Day Concert in the stunning Vienna Musikverein has been an exalted tradition for more than seven decades, and the resulting recordings with works from the Strauss dynasty and their contemporaries are among the classical market's most important releases. The programme traditionally revolves around waltzes and polkas by the Strauss family (Johann father and son as well as Josef and Eduard Strauss). In 2012 the programme is once again a skilful blend of well-known classics and six New Year’s Concert premieres. As always the concert is bound to end with two traditional encores--the famous waltz The Blue Danube and the Radetzky March.

In a program that emphasizes polkas over waltzes, the Wiener Philharmoniker (Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra) gives yet another riveting, quite inspired, New Year's Concert performance featuring the superb musicianship of orchestra concertmaster Rainer Honeck and conductor Mariss Jansons, who returns for his second New Year's Concert program, the latest in a fruitful twenty year-old partnership (Among the musicians is the orchestra's first American member, trombonist Jeremy Wilson, whose first - and only - orchestral audition was with the Vienna State Opera Orchestra - from whom the members of the Wiener Philharmoniker are elected to - in 2007, becoming a member of the Wiener Philharmoniker in 2011.). Featured are polkas and quadrilles composed by Johann Strauss, Sr., Eduard Strauss ("Carmen Quadrille"), Joseph Strauss and Johann Strauss, including the likes of "Tritsch-Trasch" and "Thunder and Lightning" polkas. One of the musical highlights includes Jansons conducting and playing simultaneously, a most unique percussion instrument, and the Vienna Boys Choir accompanying the Wiener Philharmoniker, in "Fireproof Polka" (Joseph Strauss). Others included the New Year's Concert debut performances of Hans Christian Lumbye's "Copenhagen Railway Steam Gallop "(a Danish admirer of Johann Strauss, who was Tivoli Gardens' musical director) and Peter I. Tchaikovsky's "Panorama" and "Waltz" from the ballet "Sleeping Beauty". According to longstanding tradition, this concert ends on a most triumphant note with the encores "Blue Danube Waltz" (Johann Strauss) and "Radetzky March" (Johann Strauss, Sr.).Read more ›

These recordings come about every year,(of course!) and are pretty similar. The 1987 Karajan recording is a landmark and a "must have" for all lovers of the Strauss family, and both Harnoncourt concerts were especially fine, but by and large the recordings duplicate too much material for most collectors to want to purchase every one-and that applies to me too. I did buy the first Jansons concert, which I thought was exceptionally fine, and having enjoyed the broadcast of this concert, I happily ordered the CD recording.
The distinguishing factors in this year's issue are the exceptional recording quality, and the unusual programme.
Sony/BMG has again commissioned Teldex of Berlin, who were responsible for the excellent Vienna recordings with Maazel and Harnoncourt, to act for them- with once again superb results. The thunder has never rumbled so loudly and clearly in "Donner und Blitzen", the train effects in the Lumbye number are beautifully caught, and the orchestra is reproduced with the usual warmth and beauty but with more detail revealed than ever before.
The novelties include the Lumbye ("The Strauss of the North") number, the Sleeping Beauty excerpts, the riotous Carmen Quadrille and the exquisite "Tic Tac." Familiar numbers by Ziehrer and Hellmesberger are included, but the biggest novelty is the introduction of the Vienna Boys Choir, the first vocal inclusion since Battle for Karajan in 1987.
So, a well balanced selection of the familiar and unfamiliar, recorded to a standard which is the best yet-phenomenal sense of presence-and lovingly conducted by Jansons, making this a great recommendation for those looking for just one recording, and a splendid addition to the collections of those collecting more recordings.

Brilliant concert and wonderful playing by the only orchestra in the world that always plays Strauss and it needs to be played. Lovely music that makes you smile and gets you singing along. The Vienna boys choir are superb in the two pieces they sing and by the end of the album you feel so much happier. Next to Karajan this is the best New Year Concert you could hope to listen to. An essential disc to have in your collection!

This issue of this years New Year's Concert is among the very best from the last decade. The Lumbye Railway Galopp, which I as Dane has known from my childhood, is performed brilliantly. The CD is worth every Penny

A far more traditional New Years Concert than the 2011 disc.I was in two minds whether to buy this years disc after listening to last years which was so dull. But the 2012 disc has given me faith to carry on collecting this group of discs. This concert in Vienna is the highlight of New Years Eve,to get a ticket is like gold dust, therefore having the disc brings back memories, and that can never be a bad thing when something went so well!

This 2012 edition in the series of New Year's Day concerts from Vienna features the return of Mariss Jansons to the podium for the event after his earlier 2006 debut. On this occasion he seems more at ease and the sense of greater relaxation is an advantage. Generally he keeps things moving at a fairly brisk rate without ever being extreme. The orchestra play with their customary skill and panache.

The concert programme starts by including quite a number of less familiar items which provide an additional level of interest, even though the audience takes a little time to warm up to this selection. Once the final well-known items are included the responses become noticeably more enthusiastic. This is not surprising - it is New Year's Day after all and quality entertainment is the prime order of the day. As a further Viennese attraction there are two items featuring the Vienna Boys Choir.

Mariss Jansons has had links with both Vienna and Leningrad as part of his initial studies and this link is explored in no less than 7 items including a welcome first appearance of some Tchaikovsky at these concerts. There are further moments of variety on offer too with Jansons demonstrating his performing abilities on not just the railway guard's whistle and by ringing a clock but also, more demandingly, on a pair of anvils. Naturally this extra expertise is fully appreciated by the enthusiastic audience who are by now fully warmed up!

In summary then, 2012 is a satisfying addition to this recorded series of concerts and strays enough off the beaten path to add musical interest to the familiar.
