In this collection, Sturges' camera supremely captures beauty in all its raw nobility. Like radiant sunsets, this kind of beauty needs no further adornment or comment. Through a kind of chiaroscuro effect, Sturges enthralls the viewer with every sharply beautiful feature of his female subjects. His camera makes sculpture of flesh, just as sublimely as chisels once did in the hands of the creators of statues in Greek and Roman antiquity.

I recieved this book today, having orderd it over 2 months ago, and it was worth the wait! So is it Sturges best book yet? I'd say it's as good as his other work's. It has the best prints i've seen so far, They have managed to get the all of the quality of his 8x10 photographs across to book. The book is very large in size (height & width), much larger than all his other books, but about the same amount of pages though. The extra size of each page has given each print the size they always deserved. It also features some colour prints, which is a first for Sturges, And i must admit that they're great! The colour is very vivid. If you are a fan of Jock Sturges, then you must own this book.

TOP 500 REVIEWERon 3 September 2012
I bought this linen-bound, very heavy (& big) volume when it came out. It was mentioned in Amateur Photographer at the time and I wanted something a bit exclusive, different. I'm a photographer but nudes I've not yet been able to explore myself. I've not bought either Sturges or such a book on nudes since.

However, this is an Art book, not a manual. The print quality is sublime, the paper weight heavy and one turns the pages over slowly, out of respect. The subjects are natural; fresh and totally at home with what they're doing. They don't have that knowing fortitude of professional models, either, so relaxed they seem to be.

There are family groups and smaller groups, mainly in Montelivet, on the French coast, or California. Not all the photos are nude; some are partially or fully clothed. The individuals, which include a few older children look directly into the lens, often a very fast lens with a very limited depth of field, the eyes razor sharp.

Misty Dawn, one of the nudes he so beautifully portrays, I noticed, in Amazon's listings, gets her own book by Sturges, which doesn't surprise me. She's radiantly womanly and youthful at the same time.

New Works is not a coffee table book. This is an art exhibition in a giant folder. To keep, admire and respect.
