It is a great introduction into his life
on 13 January 2017 - Published on Amazon.com
I would suggest reading this book, Carter's first, before moving to his second book, The Collected Home. It is a great introduction into his life, work and aesthetic. I would also suggest reading EVERY WORD, not just skimming the prose while looking at the fabulous photos. It is well written, very instructional, and he walks the reader through his thought processes with interesting detail. He is modest and engaging. I refer back to it often, both for inspiration and for guidance.

Love the book although the decorating style is not totally me, I enjoyed reading his thought process regarding putting the old with the new...not worrying about every little thing and just living comfortably. It helps when assessing my own home and living with animals and lots of visiting family and friends. It's all about beauty and comfort...not stressing. Just loved it.

Fresh, true individual style
on 21 November 2009 - Published on Amazon.com
I think this is a keeper for your style files. Lots and lots of photos to Carter's unique style. While a lot of designers are mixing old+new and antique+modern, I can't think of anyone who is doing so in such a distinctive way. I'm not saying Carter's style is my favorite, but it is beautifully executed, tasteful, memorable, daring, and modern. It's Gustavian, Belgium, traditional, rustic, modern, regency, french, neo-classical all rolled into one amazing book.
the text is as revelatory as the photography

Though I generally prefer more high tech as well as contemporary design, I am fully captivated by this designer's modern sensibility, powerful restraint and knowing juxtapositions. He is not merely competent, he is a master.
