Don Carson’s New Testament Surveys are updated every few years and I have been waiting eagerly for this one to appear to see what he thinks of the latest additions to this field. These surveys are especially useful to pastors and students by indicating the range of available resources and their approaches. Carson’s stance is conservative evangelical but he also respects and recommends works of scholarship and theological reflection coming from other traditions. Readers can gauge the likely value to themselves of any work discussed by factoring in their own standpoint and adjusting Carson’s opinion if necessary. Much has been recycled from his previous surveys but there is plenty of new material to help the scholar/student/pastor who Carson implicitly challenges to interact seriously and thoughtfully with New Testament scholarship old and new. As ever, one is amazed by the amount of reading Carson has got through in producing this work.
