Labour and birth advice is also very useful. The only book I really needed until baby was born and beyond.
The book is essentially divided into two parts. Chapters I-III look at your ante-natal journey, and Chapters IV and V concentrate on post-natal matters. There is a 'directory' at the end of each section that summarises troubleshooting information for before and after the birth. The book contains many useful pictures, illustrations and diagrams throughout. On the whole, the editorial team strike a good balance between being informative and sensitive in their selection of birth images. I found the pictorial guides on bathing and dressing a newborn very useful.
Overall, the book is well-written, and does a good job of delivering a lot of information in a digestible way. I didn't get on with the structure of the chapters so well in places, and sometimes found it hard to remember where a particular bit of information was, but fortunately the book has a good index! My only other observations of the book's structure are that the editors might have thought twice about placing information on 'Miscarriage' immediately before a chapter entitled 'Your Marvellous Newborn', and it is unfortunate that the section on 'How to Face Pregnancy Alone' appears amongst a sea of photos of happy couples.
These minor criticisms aside, I found this both an interesting and useful companion during my pregnancy and in the first few weeks of parenthood.
This is an awesome book. We bought many pregnancy books and my wife and I enjoyed this the most. It always amazed me how well ti described everything, and with such high accuracy in terms of the pregnancy week, expected growth, pregnancy side effects etc. It really helped manage expectations in our first pregnancy, and also reduce stress (sue to spotting etc) as it had very clear explanations, and directions of when you need to see a doctor, and when you don't.
We have since loaned this book to friends and family also expecting, I think it has gone through more than 5 pregnancies and it found it's way back to our bookshelf. Well worth the money. Would buy again books from the same author.
I think the "Expecting" book is probably more in-depth and better researched and also better structured, but there are no pictures of the developing fetus, which I really wanted, hence why I bought both. If you can only buy one, then the Bible is probably better though as is a good all-rounder. I personally don't agree with other reviewers about the pictures being too graphic. Given what's ahead, these images are tame, although the 3d scan images are perhaps a little creepy and made us decide we wouldn't want a 3d scan therefore!
Good luck with your pregnancy.
If you expect more guidance after birth, as i was expecting, perhaps you should look somewhere else as less than 25% of the book is dedicated to this.
