I was updating a previous edition of this work and I got what I expected - well almost. The contents are, as before, excellent. What was disappointing was the typographical layout. Being a smaller book, the listings are smaller in size and the layout is cramped. Not so easy or clear to consult.

Like Hart's Rules, the content is fine, and I consider this an essential writing tool. Nowadays this helps to cut through all the online confusion regarding spelling and usage. Unfortunately, however, the binding is not great, and the book won't sit well on my desk. Previous, older editions were excellent.

I was a bit concerned as this was only available in hardback and I thought it may be rather bulky to carry around but I was pleased when it arrived (very quick delivery) as it is small enough for the handbag. At a glance it looks very much like a bible or prayer book (size). the contents are terrific, everything a writer needs, when sat writing for several hours even the simplest of words can, suddenly, become totally foreign to the brain. This book sorts it out without a quibble.

My only gripe is that it is rather expensive for what it is.

Like Hart's Rules, this is a useful guide to have while completing proofreading or copy editing jobs. I don't use it as my only dictionary or source, but it is useful as a guide and certainly is an asset to have in the home.

As a writer this book is a gem for me. It provides a rapid easy reference for words for which spelling accuracy is sometimes foggy. My writing life is now complete -- for Christmas my wife has just given me the latest edition of The Oxford Dictionary of English and I already a possessed a much thumbed copy of New Hart's Rules -- now I can write with confidence. These three books should sit on the desk of everybody who aspires to be a writer of good English.

the book is smaller than I thought it was going to be, but it is a great resource to use in addition with my regular dictionary for all those words and phrases that the spell checker tells you is wrong, when you actually know that they are right. very good book, well worth getting

Any serious writer needs this small but important dictionary. If you are involved in producing or proof-reading any work either professionaly or privately, if you don't already own a copy then put it high on your Christmas list as it will become your best friend and reference bible.
