Amazon Review

New Masters of Photoshop concentrates on the creative process rather than Photoshop techniques. If you've always wanted to understand layer masks, or are itching to know the ins and outs of channel mixing this is probably not a good place to start, but if you want to learn the art of visual communication from recognised masters look no further.

The 19 contributors are artists first and foremost. Most started out using conventional materials and some even admit to technophobia and an initial reluctance to embrace digital methods before being won over by the freedom and versatility that Photoshop provides.

Images, rather than the technology used to create them, are the focus. Josh Fallon is heavily influenced by the graphic work of MC Escher, Catherine McIntyre is inspired by Vera Lehndorff's nude images in which she is painted to blend, almost imperceptibly with the natural environment. Mike Cina is well known for his ground-breaking work on testpilotcollective.com, much of which is based on design principles developed by the Bauhaus school. According to Paul Sinclair "In art, the only thing that should matter is the final image, not how it was created". Thankfully he, and the other contributors then go on to ignore this, by providing detailed explanation of the techniques that have enabled them to create unique, striking and often beautiful digital images.

These provide insights into, not just how to achieve a particular effect, which you can discover more or less anywhere, but the process by which ideas become reality--a much rarer resource. --Ken McMahon --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From the Publisher

Creating a Photoshop image is a process that occurs as much in the head as it does on the screen. Uniquely, New Masters of Photoshop documents it all, from the seeds of an idea, to the outcome on screen, paper, or canvas.

The projects include examples of collage and montage that involve manipulation of whole images and tiny fragments - working on a grand scale, and at a pixel-by-pixel level. Layers and masks, with all their subtleties, are used in fascinating ways; and filters are treated with the sensitivity and discretion they require.

The CD contains:

Audio, video, and written interviews with the authors

Source files for the tutorials

Unflattened Photoshop files for closer inspection

The Photoshop tutorials in this book are probably the best I've ever come across, and taught me more per page. They give you the ingredients on the CD, and the recipes in the book, and bingo, with a bit of patience, you get professional-looking art-work. Along the way, you learn a lot too, not only "how to do it", but the artists tell you "why they do it" the way they do. I've already gone out with my camera to get shots I can use in my own recipes, based on the stuff I learned. Very encouraging

All the tricks and techniques you could dream of...all the best graphics you've ever seen on all those cutting-edge websites which turn you green with envy! I never realised how versatile the program was until I bought this book. An essential guide to the other side of Photoshop. A must.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's more than just a showcase for Photoshop artists... 21 Sept. 2001
By Todd Groves - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
In-depth interviews with several Photoshop artists, well-planned tutorials and graphical screen grabs, and source-packed CD-ROM are just but a few of the features this great book offers. I have just scratched the surface, and I am very pleased with purchasing this book. The artists share what and who influence their work in detail, and share their views on how they bring their own voice to their work. I buy many books on Photoshop, and this has to be one of the most useful and inspiring books on Photoshop. Worth every cent.

5.0 out of 5 stars New Masters of Photoshop 15 Oct. 2001
By Trevor Morris - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
As the name implies, New Masters of Photoshop is a prolific resource that combines the unique talents and techniques of 19 modern masters of Photoshop.
The book contains over 500 full-color pages and is beautifully organized, making it as engaging as it is informative. New Masters of Photoshop is not a manual: it will not teach you how to use Photoshop. It will, however, engage you, inspire you and motivate you. The book is also accompanied by a CD that contains interviews, source files and unflattened Photoshop documents.
Even after you've read the entire book, tried all the tutorials and mastered all the techniques, you'll still find it to be a tireless repository of creative ideas and a great source of inspiration.
This is the book that the Photoshop community has been waiting for! If you buy just one book this year, make it the New Masters of Photoshop.

5.0 out of 5 stars Source of inspiration - taking thoughts into graphics 18 July 2002
By Karmen Flemming - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This book is not a step by step tutorial of Photoshop. It requires basic knowledge of the program and is aimed at people who work with Photoshop regularly and would like to learn how different designers produce and enhance their works in Photoshop. Design inspirations may come from many different sources, including fine arts, photography, drawing, other grafix packages, you name it. This book teaches you about that inspiration and how to take your work to a next level, using Photoshop as the medium. Photoshop is an image manipulation program. It is where and how you find your inspirations and initial material for designs that will determine how efficient you'll be using the program.

5.0 out of 5 stars Overall good book for advancing techniques. 4 Dec. 2002
By chuck sanchez - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This book is very helpful to people who know something about Photoshop already. What makes it different is that you are designing through the eyes of a usually good designer and learning step by step how to acheive interesting results by recreating their own works. Each designer is different so you learn to attack the same type of problems from different angles. Some of the designers ramble on in their introductions, but once you get past that it's smooth sailing. This is not your usual tutorial book so try to do 2 to 3 exercises per week. I leaned alot about Photoshop from this book and I use it as a reference for techniques quite often.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get It 28 Feb. 2003
By Matt Garcia - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
There is really not much to add to the positive comments already posted. This book really is extremely useful. Whatever level you are you can find some inspiration here. There is an assumption you have an intermediate-level knowledge of the app, but that's ok, cos even if you dont you can just pick up your manual/power PS up and work it out. The key to this book is its insight into the processes of seasoned, acclaimed, professionals. If you aint any of those right now, or even if you are, you will benefit from this book.
NB - I'd drop it a half-point as the CD is pretty useless. But that would be unfair - think of the CD as a candy accompanyment. The book is worth its weight alone.
