We love this film and have been begging DVD makers to have it put onto DVD for years. Finally it's been done - though apparently only on the US system - so beware if you're viewing it in the UK.
After taking advice at HMV, [the distributor did not get back to us with any helpful suggestions] it appears the only way we could see it was via our laptop.
Clear and crisp it was excellent - as long as you have a suitable laptop on which to view it!!

I have to say that I've had a soft spot for this comedy film for many years. This is not a laugh out load movie for me but a slow burn. Its sad that Elaine May (who directed, starred in and wrote the movie) was so unhappy with the way it turned out, heavily cut by the studio. It would have been nice to have seen her version as an option on this disc, but I suppose the usual problems with copywrite and just a lack of original prints would have made that difficult if not impossible. Incidentally, I was so impressed by the scene with Henry's uncle using an electric pepper grinder I spent large parts of the 70s looking for one! Sad eh.

Picture and sound track are ok but not spectacular, but as this movie has been almost impossible to get in any form for years, it good to see it out there in any shape or form.

I saw this film in the 1980s and thought it was hilarious but have never been able to see it since.

Watched again now and it is just as funny. Brilliant acting from Walter Matthau.

One of my all time favourites, a comedy with the right actors the right script and with a welcome and sardonic comment upon the institution. Immense fun but not the whole piece. I saw it just after release in a longer version that was even better for building the character played by Walter Matthau just after the wedding. This is a gem half concealed by the studio's incompetence. And the distributors could have taken more care with the print.

"I'm so glad you found a nice suitable young lady."
"She is NOT suitable. She's primitive, she has no spirit, no wit, no conversation, and she has to be vacuumed every time she eats."
"Oh, she must be very wealthy sir..."

Long before she hit the kind of record books you don't want to appear in with Ishtar, Elaine May's main claim to cinematic fame was 1971's wonderfully dry black comedy A New Leaf - or at least what was left of it after the studio cut it down from some three hours to 102 minutes, losing a few characters like William Hickey's blackmailer and a much darker spin on the film's ending in the edit. It probably didn't help that, in shades of the American History X saga, May wouldn't let the studio see her apparently unfinished rough cut after ten months of editing or that, as with Ishtar, she went massively over schedule and spent more than twice the original budget but, surprisingly it doesn't look or play like a butchered film. In fact, it's such a wonderfully complete piece of work that you can't help thinking that in the case the studio may well have cut away the fat, or at least some of the less than successful on-set improvisation that May is infamous for with her tendency to keep the cameras rolling until they run out of film even if the actors have left the scene, as reputedly happened on Mikey and Nicky when she berated the cameraman for cutting because "They might come back!

I have watched this film many times over the years and it still amuses. The dead-pan humour of Walter Matthau and his Gentleman's Gentleman is priceless. Well worth the money on DVD, though sad it is only available as a Spanish import. If you can't understand the menu, look the Spanish words up on Google Translate. That way you can press the right buttons and view it in English. Highly recommended!

check the video on the AFI site of Elaine May's acceptance speech for her former hubby, Mike Nicholls. her dry wit shows again.

you will see why they were called 'the fastest couple on earth'. there is an lp record of their various alter-egos.too.

one of my favourite comedies, so many good performances. the deliciously cynical uncle, played by james coco, is as memorable as the leads.
altogether a terrific comedy, worth re-watching, which is rare, to catch the nuanced performances.(william redfield, as the frustrated accountant is priceless).

Elaine is actually quite an elegant lady, but her Henrietta persona is loveable. I would not wish to see the darker elements, cut by the studio, added back. it works well as it is, Mathau thought the released version was good., I read.

A gem of a comedy, its droll humour typical of Elaine May, who is remembered for her delicious sketches with Mike Nichols. Super to have it on this excellent DVD.
