Was hopeing this book would be full of plans that i could use to get planning permision, It has a huge number of plans with drawing of front elevation and then a plan of the internal layout with all the measurements of the rooms.

All the plans are copywight protected so you cant just blow them up and submit them, From these though you can draw your own plans using the ones in the book as a guide.

I bought this book and the older version of the same hopeing they would have different plans, they did, and it was well worth buying them, its a bargain me thinks, they haved saved me about £1300 in architechts fees for a few days reading and drawing.

Aparently its possible to buy the full plans "off the shelf" the details are in the book, i have no idea as to the price though.. all the best, dont think about it buy it , you wont be dissapointed. regards mark

We all need a starting point on the route to self building and this was certainly an ideal way to begin. It contains guidelines on the self building process (the do's and dont's) and lots of detailed plans for all sorts of layouts, names and addresses of suppliers and many other points for reference. Once you've finished reading it, it will only inspire you to go out and build the house you've always wanted.

This book is brimming with plans. So, how do you get these plans to turn into real houses? Well, you go to the architects whose addresses and E mails are given in the book, and with which the plans are copyrighted and lodged, to get an authorised copy of them, right? WRONG! I went to such a company indicated in the book asking for the price of a copy of one plan given in the book, and was told that the company would not supply it. Seems that the companies are only interested if you want them to build your house for you, which defeats the whole idea of self build.

So, this book can only be considered as an ideas book. After you decide which plan you like, you have two options: draw the plan up yourself or hand a copy of the idea to an architect who will work with you and draw the plans up for you. One takes time, and the other costs money, but at least the book gave you the idea!

For those building overseas, beware. Many of the designs in this book are reliant on using timber in ample quantities. You may find that in certain tropical climates that that is not such a good idea, since your dream house will become the biggest termite feast in the neighbourhood! Yes, wood can be protected against this, but generally overseas design in tropical locations minimise the wood content in house builds to reduce the chances of your dream house becoming a bug feast.

Poor quality, very american style plans that i found uninteresting and of no use to me at all.

I realize you get what you pay for and if you are looking for real inspiration on plans for a new house you will need to go upmarket.

Its a really worthwhile book and, having looked at and studied all the plans for the size plot we could afford, chose a really good design so hopefully we can find the plot and get cracking!

Pretty good, but there may be better sources of inf for plans. It does give some good info and general ideas to see what type of properties you. Might like to self build.
