Review

Fresh, stimulating and accessible look at Italian Renaissance art. --RA Magazine

An impressive volume that looks at one of the greatest periods of art in a genuinely new and fascinating way ... huge and beautifully illustrated. --Country Life

Very much a book of today ... the largest and most comprehensive textbook on the subject - sure to make a Botticelli lover out of anyone. --Monocle

Stunning … Campbell and Cole set out to escape from the shadow of Hartt's impressive but dated study, and give us a new history of Italian Renaissance art that is much more fully aware of the historical and social contexts in which it was produced … excellent and plentiful colour illustrations. --Art Quarterly

Prompts some fascinating insights ... this is a book that draws readers in and makes them discover new, illuminating contexts. --Apollo

A massive, copiously illustrated volume … strong on technique, court art and centres of production --Burlington Magazine

Splendid … Among the best scholars in their field, they have produced a text informed by methodological sophistication, allied to an ability to make complex subjects accessible … the mental ability with which topics are integrated into a well-written text is remarkable … an enlightened book that can be read with profit by advanced beginners as well as seasoned professionals --The Art Newspaper

Format: Hardcover
Reinforce your bookshelves, strengthen your thighs and brace yourself for a huge book on Italian Renaissance Art. This is a big subject and it is dealt with thoroughly in this hefty tome. The book is approached chronologically and takes us through the different phases of the period. It is amply and well illustrated with numerous examples of painting, architecture and sculpture. Yet I wished there were more full page illustrations. The book discusses contemporary artists side by side. It looks at production and the site of the paintings, the patrons and reactions to paintings when they were first seen. Lovers of the great centres of Italian art - Rome, Venice and Florence will delight in this book. If you love Michelangelo, Raphael and more, you'll love this book. This new approach is accessible to all. You'll see the dazzling tradition from a new perspective - fresh, intelligent, this book pulls out all the stops. It is excellent value. An excellent overview of the Italian Renaissance. Not exhaustive, perhaps, but certainly an excellent crash course in the basics, and splendidly illustrated throughout. I first read this having taken it out from the library, and bought it as soon as I could.
