About the Author

Pat Morris, or Mr Hedgehog, is this country's leading hedgehog expert; having studied them for over 40 years, he has probably published more scientific papers on the European hedgehog than anyone. An established author and broadcaster, he was consultant to BBC TV's Great Hedgehog Mystery and various other wildlife programmes. He was formerly Senior Lecturer in Zoology, Royal Holloway (University of London). He also wrote Dormice in this series.

This is an amazing book in every way!

It is a very easy read and is packed with incredible facts about the hedgehog. The book is very well written and is very often funny, yet still informative.

This book should be on every person's book shelf!

I found it a bit boring, also I think this author is way behind the times in his assertion that bread and milk are OK foods for hedgehogs - all other experts strongly advise not doing so as hedgehogs are lactose intolerant and have difficulty digesting wheat. As soon as I read this I stopped reading it, haven't looked at it since. There are better, more interesting, books than this.

I can recommend this book, it is a great insight into the life of the hedgehog,we have gained so much from this book.
We have hedgehogs in the garden and I made a feeding station out of a plastic storeage box we put dry food in the feeding bowl plus some sunflower seeds and choped peanuts, two small bowls of water outside by the enterence.

All that you need to look after the deserted hoglets. We seem to get quite a few. Luckily we have a Hedgehog sanctuary near us, but this book makes sure that you don't do anything silly before getting them to a proper hospital/sanctuary.

This is an excellent overview of the life of a hedgehog. It is both comprehensive and easy to understand without being 'lost in the science' or patronising. Highly recommended.

I brought this as a present for my bf who doesn't like to read much but loves hedgehogs! He hardly puts the book down and when he isn't reading it he is quoting the book to me.

Very interesting for us as we are currently fostering a couple of hedgehogs through the winter but also great for anyone who is interested in the hedgehogs in their garden.

A couple of Hedgehogs visited my garden last year. Also there was a mother and four hoglets in the garage. I wanted a book which gave me information about feeding them. This book is so interesting with lots of facts and history of the Hedgehog. There was a mother and four hoglets in my garage aged about five to six weeks. They are left to their own devices at six weeks according to this book. I was able to feed them suitable food, Top quality cat kibbles, mealworms, chopped peanuts etc.The joy of seeing them every evening coming to feed was an unforgettable sight. As the Hedgehog is becoming endangered they should be encouraged in gardens, I have a film of one eating a slug! The book states that although they eat slugs and snails, beetles make up a large part of their diet. Perhaps that is why they like mealworms. Any one interested in helping these endearing creatures should read this book. Two adults are visiting this year, I hope there are hoglets again this year in July.

I agree with all the other good reviews but no-one has mentioned the charming illustrations by Guy Troughton. Every page sems to have a drawing, a graph or a cartoon to illustrate the excellent text by Pat Morris.
