This occurred too often and spoilt my enjoyment of a book, which had potential but has been let down by the formatting and the seemingly swift conclusion
The characters are all completely believable to the point you find yourself wondering about them days later. I was absolutely hooked from beginning to end, proper 'just one more page until two o' clock in the morning' stuff. Like some other reviewers, you'd get a whole other perspective by reading it a second time as well.
If you like the kind of book where you can't wait to see how all the threads are going to weave together (you know they are, but how?!) it couldn't come more highly recommended.
The conclusion of the story means that the second time of reading is as rewarding as the first and casts an entirely fresh slant on the book. I'd absolutely recommend The New Goodbye, it's a wonderful addition to any literary collection.
A moving meditation on love and loss, The New Goodbye is also gripping and beautifully written. Fans of Ayres' short fiction will not be surprised to see a rich seam of magic realism running through the piece. Highly recommended!
I found it very hard when the book kept jumping from character to character, period to period, time in the past then back to present, back to other characters. May have made more sense maybe if it was paragraphed differently.
Just found the book hard to read and enjoy. Sorry.
