Product Description

From the Back Cover

A new, fully revised and updated edition of a well-established, unique work of reference and companion to all fields of modern thought.

• More discursive than an ordinary dictionary, more compact than an encyclopaedia.
• Indispensable as a reference book, irresistible for browsing through: almost an education in itself.
• The new edition has over 1000 new entries; hundreds have been rewritten/updated (total entries = 3500); it is 10% longer than previous edition; there are 106 new contributors; many areas have been expanded (e.g. sexual politics, race, environmental studies, computing); many new headwords added (God, communitarianism, perestroika, afrocentrism, Third Wave feminism, hypertext, culture jamming, fuzzy logic, infopreneur).

“How did one exist without this splendid book?”
The Economist
“Quite unputdownable”
Times Higher Education Supplement.

As far as I know, the only dictionary in its kind and even if it had competition, it would probably still be the best one around. Clearly written, with more then 3500 entries, you will find all the concepts, ideas etc, that civilisation has come up with for the past 3000 years.

This dictionary will complement most usefully, authoritatively, and with just the right amount of words, any other encyclopaedic dictionary that may have let you down on complex conceptual thinking.

I highly recommend this book without any exception. It is a fascinating and interesting read on critical theory and thinking for the lay person or scholar. It gives a substantial and in depth introduction to each topic and it far exceeds any other available dictionary available on this topic.

A must for anyone in humanities or social science, this book is an absolute lifesaver! So, you do not understand the terms used in the lecture? This will explain them in a few sentences. Also great for summaries of school of thoughts in philosophy and similar. It also suggests readings relevant to the term you have looked up, which is beneficial for essays or seminars.
