My son is a trainee primary school teacher, teaching at a local primary school; this is his review:

This book is easily read and understood, with its colourful images (that had an additional, if slightly distracting, bonus of starting discussions about food and games!) and clear instructions. Some of the 'big' words, such as 'subtraction', 'doubling' and 'halving' needed to be explained to the children in simpler terms, but the images helped. It definitely made learning fun.

It is a book aimed at three separate year classes, so don't expect a 5yo to finish it; it needs to be used in conjunction with what is being taught in class. However, if you do want your child to get ahead, this is a very good book to start with, and if you're not very good at Maths yourself, it's easy to refer to the (removable) answers section.

It is great value for money, as the pages can be rubbed out, and the book can then be used as a refresher. It is a 2013 edition, so is in line with curriculum.

This is one in a great range of workbooks from CGP, which include books in English, Maths, English Skills Practice, Maths Skills Practice and even French and Spanish. These are all for Key Stage 1, so ages 5 - 11. I have often used the CGP books and it is good to see that they have combined really useful questions with an appealing, bright workbook, aimed to appeal at younger children.

This particular book is the first Mental Maths workbook - there are three books in all; the first for 5-7, the second for 7-9 and the third for 9-11. The book contains questions in adding, subtracting, number facts to 10 and 20, counting by 1 and 10, bigger numbers, doubling and halving, multiplying and dividing by 2, multiplying and dividing by 5, multiplying and dividing by 10, the two times table, five times table, ten times table and problem solving. The pages are colourful and the questions aimed to engage children - in one page, for example, the children have to colour in the correct answers to calculations to help a seal make his way across ice floes to his dinner. There is a pull out answer section and the back cover has a game to play. Overall, a really good book and a series of workbooks which look extremely useful and cover a good range of subjects.

Another learning tool - and a useful one it looks to be. The book is illustrated in a bright / colourful way which will make it more interesting for the children. It is varied and gives lots of different pictures from animals to robots. In terms of the maths - is is as follows:

* Adding
* Subtracting
* Number Facts to 10
* Number Facts to 20
* Counting by 1 and 10
* Bigger Numbers
* Doubling and Halving
* Multiplying by 2
* Dividing by 2
* Multiplying by 5
* Dividing by 5
* Multiplying by 10
* Dividing by 10
* Two Times Table
* Five Times Table
* Ten Times Table
* Problem Solving

I can see that we will have fun with a our little ones in the future with this, and this book will make learning maths more fun.

I was initially put off by the publisher’s logo – I think it’s supposed to be a sports coach, but the character looks sinister in their cap and sun glasses. But looking through this cheap 32 page book with my son has left me rather impressed.

The mental maths challenges are engaging, and I like the way they progress and cover useful concepts.

The answer pages are in the centre of the book, so can be easily removed. The text and explanations are simple, brief, but effective.

This is another excellent publication in the Practise & Learn series. Aimed at Key Stage 1 children this Mental Maths book works through examples and questions involving addition, subtraction, counting, number bonds, doubling & halving, problem solving and the 2x, 5x and 10x tables. The pages are colourful and engaging with different layouts and there is also a pull out answer guide (if you need it!) I will definitely be using this with my year 2 class and would recommend this to parents who are looking to help their child with maths at home.

My 6 yr old son picked this up and took to the opening tasks very easily which was a good indication of the curricular level of learning. He was tempted to jump ahead to different levels but soon got into the flow of working through. Has dipped in and out over the last week and it seems to be providing a good level of application for him. Will see how he fairs over the rest of the book and aim to update my review over time.

As an infant teacher, I know what I am talking about when it comes to work for age 5-7 and I would say don't bother with this.

Firstly the book is supposed to cover the age range 5-7, which is 3 years of rapid development - i.e. vast in terms of the level of Maths work children should be doing - this means that the book has very easy pages and very hard pages - you won't be able to work through it from page to page unless your child is at the top end of the ability range. There are a good few pages in the book, but the coverage isn't that great as it is spanning a big range of abilities.

Secondly, the book isn't really sure what it is doing. The top of each page contains a teaching section, but I didn't feel these were particularly clear, and as the Maths covered in this book is for ages 5-7 I would think that most children wouldn't be able to read this part and would need it explaining by mum or dad. Mum or Dad could probably explain the concepts just as easily themselves! This means that on each page there aren't that many questions for the child to answer - and the key to getting good at Maths is tonnes and tonnes of practice so that the calculations become automatic.

If you want worksheets too do with your child here are so many free websites with downloads - you could then find out which areas your child is covering at school and download something on the same theme instead of doing whatever is in this book.

Lastly, I find the concept of a mental maths BOOK to be a contradiction in terms!
