Product description

Twenty travellers sit round a table in an Exeter inn. None have ever met before, but in the course of their bus journey to Canterbury each will tell a Tale in verse to the others. With three extra story-tellers joining in (including the AA Man who fixes the bus when it breaks down), the number of Tales told matches the number of pilgrims contributing to Chaucer's Tales. Farcical, wistful, bloody, or re-tellings of old stories, each Tale reflects the personality of the Teller. And a varied lot they are, including a Landlady, an Archaeologist, an Auctioneer, a Romantic Novelist, a Potter, a Gardener, a Taxi Driver, a Lay Preacher, and a Marquess. In Sir Michael Holroyd's words: 'The New Canterbury Tales are brilliantly skilful, full of enjoyment, dexterity and fun'.

The last time I read The Canterbury Tales it was in mediaeval English (an unintentional purchase) and I was delighted to be able to understand it! This latest edition by James Muirden gave me even more pleasure. The rhyming and retelling detracted not a jot from the original, indeed to my mind should be a "must read" for anyone who enjoys verse. Each character in the book who relates his/her tale uses a different verse form - so clever. Well done James!

What a brilliantly differently crafted book. It is always a treat to find a new book by James Muirden, and this is unique. I always love to read his very expressive verse aloud because it lends itself so well to this sort of presentation, and this book in particular was very much enjoyed by me and any of my friends who were within earshot at the time! Buy it, read it (aloud or not) and enjoy it. I guarantee you will feel the better for it.. .

The New Canterbury Tales is a work of genius because James Muirden is a poetic genius. He deserves to be much better known than he is but the truth is that he is far too good for the British Poetry Establishment who have made a fetish of mediocrity. I already own most of Mr Muirden's books and am going to order the few that I don't yet possess very soon. His day will surely come and if the poetry establishment weren't quite so pathetically incestuous would have arrived many moons ago.
