On the plus side, there's plenty of room for my wide foot to splay out, and like many minimalist shoes, they don't need wearing in, and I haven't had any rubbing which I usually do with other shoes. They are incredibly light, so much so, that its akin to running in socks, and give enough padding for those wishing to move to a more minimalist running regime, without totally dispensing of any foot protection.
However, these are not trail shoes, they do not grip with anywhere near the same sureness as say, the vivo barefoot Breatho, I've used them on the same runs as the Breatho, and they don't compare at all! I've used them recently walking on a forest trail, and they don't like any moisture on a hard surface, they become slippery underfoot. I use them for road runs instead. If they introduced slightly more sturdiness to the shoe, ands with a more aggressive sole like the Breatho, then I think they may being to a winner, until then this is a fair weather shoe, looks good, feels good, but can't cut the mustard when asked to do so!
If I may make an analogy..... In Crocodile Dundee, when confronted by a potential mugger who pulls out a knife, mick Dundee says, " Call that a knife?!.... now THIS is a Knife!!!" And pulls out a huge hunting knife... Well this NB trail shoe, is up against the Mick Dundee of trail shoes, in the vivo barefoot Breatho, now that is a trail shoe!!
Ironically, they are possibly the cheapest pair of running shoes that I've bought in the last five years (at least five pairs in that time) and they live up to the usual New Balance standards of sizing, comfort and fit. Highly recommended if you're thinking of this sort of shoe.
I tried this type of shoe and not the five toe shoe one because, I really don't like having my toes touched to begin with, and the idea of a shoe sperating my toes was not inviting and the thought was uncomfortable.
I am an active sportsmen and need something light and secure for the sports I do in the gym.
I do wear socks with this shoe with no discomfort, I went with a slightly larger shoe to allow for the sock - I do not like no socks when training!
The shoe feels awesome on the treadmill and on pavement, I ran 2 miles my first try and my calf's weren't killing me the next day. I do a lot of Squats and lunges alomg with jump rope (skipping) and these shoes are great for such workouts.
It has plenty of room for your toes to stretch and the rest of the shoe fits nice and snug. Walking over gravel feels the way it would barefoot, you can feel every rock, but when you run on hard floor, amazingly my feet feel "NO" discomfort
Highly recomend for the Gym and for the road - they are light and easy to fit into my travel bag so I can work out when I am travelling.
My main comment about the shoes is the lack of longevity. After 6 months the thin material has torn in several places and small holes have appeared above the toe box. The shoe still works of course, but it doesn't seem that they will last forever. They're a good cheap price here on Amazon, for for 6 months wear maybe the price is realistic. But I expected more from a pair of shoes endorsed and advertised with a well known ultra runner behind them. For longevity and materials... 3 stars at the most. Perhaps I am unrealistic expecting comfortable and supple materials to last too long.
One thing. The sizes do come up quite small. I had to go for 1 size larger than usual even without socks.
