I have bought and read the first 2 volumes and now I have just completed the third and I happen to like this one the most. The art is great except for Howard Chaykin work which is truly terrible, but thankfully his contribution is fairly small. All the other artist involved with this volume are excellent especially Leinil Yu's work which stands out from the rest. This volume concentrates on the civil war story-arc and sets up 'Secret Invasion' perfectly.

Luke Cage, Wolverine, Captain America Iron Fist, Spiderman, Dr Strange, Ronin and Spider Woman make up the renegade Avengers and you cant help but root for them in their game of cat-and-mouse with the Government-backed Avengers which including Iron Man, Sentry, Ares, Ms Marvel and Wonder Man. I have read the Civil War graphic novel, which was ok, but this is far more interesting.

The over-sized, hard-cover volumes are the best way to read this great era in the Avengers story. Michael Bendis' writing is very good and I am at a loss why the man gets so much stick. This is a brilliant volume but it is essential you buy and read the first 2 volumes first. Make sure you buy the oversized version only; if it doesnt say "oversized" in the description; check the product details ...... this will state the dimensions to be around 28 cm high and have around 300-400 pages.

The third 'Over-Sized Hardcover' New Avengers collection following New Avengers Volume 1 HC: v. 1 and New Avengers: v. 2 (New Avengers). This one collects the following:

New Avengers #21-23
New Avengers: Illuminati
Civil War: The Confession
Civil War: The Initiative

It's worth noting that issues #21-25 are also collected in the paperback New Avengers: Civil War v. 5 (New Avengers) but that book is missing the three extra comics and, being 'regular size' has smaller pages. As with the previous volumes this is the best way to collect New Avengers, you get more material at a higher quality, the only downside is that you have to wait longer for them to be released.

There's little point in buying this book if you haven't read the first two in the series but if you have then this one progresses the story and maintains the quality of previous installments. Plot-wise this book covers the 'Civil War' storyline that ran through much of the Marvel universe in 2006-2007 which involved a lot of shake-ups to the team as the New Avengers become an underground and 'unofficial' Avengers team.

If you want to follow the 'official' team then I recommend the first hardcover collection:

the new avengers started as an interesting series with a diverse set of characters but had got bogged down recently with too many overlapping stories and an ever changing roster. this is a return to form.

the book benefits by concentrating on one main issue: the draining of the heroes powers and subsequent consequences. the bickering (sometimes funny, sometimes annoying) between the heroes ceases as they have to focus on their battle with norman osbourn and the hood.

the issue ends dramatically, and i will definitely be buying the next book to see how this ends. the next book leads to the new avengers finale.

note to fans of wolverine: although wolverine is shown on the back cover, he does not appear in this book at all.

I am a fan of New Avengers, but I simply did not like this one book. Basically, it just seems to be five issues in the middle of the series to say: "Civil War is in New Avengers too and we cannot start Revolution (which is much better) until it is over." My main problem is the weakness of the stories:
Captain America: Captain America finds Falcon in the sewer then goes to see Hank Pym. That is about all that happens.
Luke Cage: This one is all right, I guess. Jessica Jones runs away, SHIELD attack Luke Cage, Captain America, Falcon and Daredevil show up to start a fight, a SHIELD agent says the old line that no Marvel Comic can go without ("Okay, we have a real situation here."), the four heroes steal a SHIELD vehicle and escape.
Spider-Woman: This is the only good one. Spider-Woman is stuck in the middle of a civil war, on neither side, reporting back on SHIELD and Hydra to Nick Fury who has gone missing. SHIELD arrest her for reporting on them to Hydra, the Helicarrier is attacked by Hydra, Hydra try to talk Spider-Woman to be the new Madame Hydra, Spider-Woman destroys the Hydra base and joins Captain America's Secret Avengers.
Sentry: This is the worst one. Basically, Sentry runs away to the moon, he blames the void (AGAIN!), meets the Inhumans and tells them everything that has happened in the New Avengers series (which the readers already know), Iron Man shows up and acts like a moron, then they both leave.
