Finally an up to date (2005) comprehensive manual to acrylics, as a fine art lecturer students always ask for book recommendations and I won't hesitate with this one. Easy to follow and full of advice, excellent refrence book.

I would recommend this book to anybody new(ish) to acrylics. If you want to stop regarding acrylics as mimic alternatives to oils and start understanding them as a completely new medium full of exciting possibilities of their own, then this is the book for you! It is a comprehensive guide through the mind-boggling range of paint types and media that will take a lot of the guesswork out of choosing what you need to achieve the effects you are looking for.

I have worked in acrylics for nearly 30 years and have often wondered where the book was which would tell me about the technical side of the media, having not had the benefit of art school. Well, I found it in spades in this book, together with just enough ideas about how to utilise acrylic media without giving you a step-by-step project approach. I feel this is important because it forces you to apply a technique to your own ideas and doesn't create a copyist end-point.
Yes, there is a fair bit of science in the book, but I felt it was presented in a way which was relevant to how you might use acrylic and helped develop an understanding of its properties.
The only minor downside is that some of the media mentioned (the author is a technical advisor for a Canadian paint manufacturer) are not readily available through the main brand names, in fact an internet search for this side of the pond (UK) only threw up one Dutch site which stocks them. Nevertheless I would recommend (and already have!) this book to anyone who works in, or is considering, acrylic painting.

I have been at a stage in which I have become a little stuck in what techniques etc, can be used with acrylics. I am so glad this book was brought for me as a xmas present. It has been constantly in use as a reference book, and has enabled artwork to become more diverse. Leading me to look out for other books of this level, of which are recommended in this book. To also guide me further.

I bought this book at the same time as 'New Acrylics Essential Sourcebook' by the same author. At the time of purchase, I wondered how much crossover there might be with the two books and whether it was worth spending the money, but I did and it was worth it.

There is some crossover, but I think that it is not too much; each book can then be read separately and independently. However, buying both gives a greater knowledge base.

For artists who have some knowledge of acrylics or for beginners this and the other book is essential reading.
